Rep Power: 464 | | | My favorite restaurants in my town are locally owned, so they aren't in any calorie-counter books. So when I go, I try to order things that aren't fried, lots of veggies, smaller portions, etc. I guesstimate the number of calories by using an online calorie counter. I usually get appetizers instead of a full entree, as well, since a full entree is usually enough for 2 meals and a snack!
I wish the calorie posting law would go into effect everywhere, too. It would be more helpful for sure. I would hope that it wouldn't hurt business for small, locally-owned eateries, though. I'm not really into the corporately owned, cookie-cutter restaurants that are the same everywhere you go - I like eating at different and unique, off-the-beaten-path places when I travel, and here at home - locally owned places. But I rarely eat out, and on road trips I usually pack enough food to eat through the day and just eat at a restaurant one meal a day, usually dinner. It saves money and it helps me eat right on my trip.

Rep Power: 26456 | | | Geez, how can someone be UPSET AT THIS!!? This is probably the best thing that CAN happen. Does anyone ENJOY being overweight? I love this idea. My mom and I print out nutritional information wherever we can find it on the internet for resturants and take it with us there!!! So we usually have 16 printed internet pages and the waiter looks at us like we're crazy! haha But seriously, it's upsetting because you can finally see what you're really eating. It's like we're living in this world that if you cant see the calorie content it's not there. Duh, resturants DONT cook much healthy food, and if it is a healthy food the portion is out of control. It's okay to splurge every once in awhile, but you're more likely to pick something with 10-15 grams of fat to splurge instead of 40 haha! (At least I know I would because I'm on a very low fat diet, plus 25g of fat is my intake that I try to stay at or below)
I think it's the best thing to happen ever. I am so happy and I hope every single resturant does this. People should be informed of what they're eating so they can try to control themselves. Newsflash, america is overweight. We're obviously doing something wrong. Maybe this is just another step in the right direction. Just switching to transfat free canola oil isnt going to do it. hahaha

Rep Power: 22380 | | | I just bought the book "eat this not that" and it rocks. I am going to start carrying it with me. We eat out alot. I wish they would do that here. I always have to hop online before I eat out and check out what I can eat. I always ask my hubby if it would be odd to ask for nutrition info and he always says yes.... dang it and I dont ask. Sounds like a wonderful idea what they did...
if you think about it..its the portions of most of the food...If you have a huge plate of pasta..yeah its going to be alot.... I used to get a turkey burger at ruby tuesdays it blew my mind that ever single burger is over 1000(I looked it up in my book). The bella turkey burger is the worst thing... I figured turkey and mushrooms cant be that bad..yeah freaking right....needless to say we dont go there anymore

Rep Power: 15073 | | | I take a calorie counter book almost everywhere I go(I know that seems strange... sometimes they laugh at me)... I wish that more places would do what NY is doing.
Sadly, I sometimes bail on my friends because I don't know if there are any healthy options at restaurants that they want to go to.

Rep Power: 35819 | | | I think I will start writing out governor requesting that we do this. I am also in TX and the fat here is ridiculous. Ignorance is certaily not bliss when it comes to the extreme obesity we see here and all the illnesses that come with it. I wonder if our government knows how much more productive our society could be if the majority of us were not obese. It really is a sad state when the "average" person is at least 50 pounds over weight.
I would love to see a law requiring cals to be posted.

Rep Power: 0 | | | It's really eye-opening. I work & go to school in Manhattan, and the other day I went to a Starbucks to get some tea & a quick bite to eat. When I saw the calories in some of the items there, I think I literally said out loud, "Oh, no way!" The calorie counts are AWESOME & a good 'check' - sometimes you may be hungry & want to pick up something on the go but seeing the calorie count is a good reality check. I have one of those mama-jama sized calorie counter books - I should definitely pick up a pocket sized one to carry with me...

Rep Power: 14062 | | | I wish this was available in the UK. Its such a pain thinking you have ordered say a salad thinking its the better choice and then it comes drenched in oil or soemthing like that.
At least if the nutritional info is there you can make an informed descision.

Rep Power: 5274 | | | This is great! I work in SF so hopefully it's coming here soon. Maybe if people stop ordering the 1500-2000 calorie ,eals, and the 400 calorie meals start selling well they will switch out their menu a bit.

Rep Power: 93700 | | | I think this is a great idea too, it'd definitely make my life easier. It'd be interesting to see if all the states did this if it would help with people and restaurants making longterm changes and our health issues decline. But I wonder if once everyone got over the initial shock if the majority of the general public would become immune to the high calorie counts and just go on the way they are now.

Some people care, and will still eat those foods though.
OR. There are some people who just dont even give a hoot about anything to do with calories, sodium, fat, or dietary fiber content.
I would hope all the states would do this, becuase maybe it could help someone who thinks they are making good choices only to see that their salad that they've been shoving down has 800 calories in it. It might make a dent into obesity, but I severly doubt it. It's more of a help to people who really don't understand which foods are bad, or people who have been tricked by salads and "healthy" items on the menu.
People who are overweight know why they are overweight, and over eating usually an emotional underlying cause. So no matter how many calories something may contain it's like a drug. Whenever they eat they realease dopamine in their brain, and that's why eating is so pleasurable, and an "easy fix" for problems.
The availability of food in many countries is over abundant, and people would obviuosly get mad if they were rationed of how much food they could buy, or consume.
So what can we do? It's a lose lose situation.. things like this are tiny helpers in a plentiful problem.
At least it helps people like us who would like to be in the right direction to health.
On a side note...has anyone noticed that it's so much easier to consume foods that have no nutritional label as opposed to ones that do?
My boyfriend goes nuts because I take so long at convenience stores becuase I'm looking on the back of every item, but if it's a fix it up sub place I sort of know in the back of my head it might be bad, but its really easier to eat...
anyone else like that? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
