You can get heavier duty tires that are kevlar reinforced, so I dont think weight should be a limit... just dont get super lightweight stuff.

Biking is absolutely lower stress on all joints, especially ankles since it is zero impact. To reduce knee stress make sure your seat is high enough that the most you need to bend your leg is 90 degrees at the top of the pedal stroke.
