It is interesting that 1) the study was controlled so that the participants did not loose weight and 2) that only the maintenance level of the
Atkins diet was followed without adequate restriction of sugar and sugar forming foods first.
Regarding 1 above: to be able to follow the
Atkins diet and not loose weight would mean that your insulin levels are too high to allow lipolysis to occur and/or that you are eating an enourmous amout of
calories.
Regarding 2 above: The induction phase (restricted sugar and sugar forming foods) does have similar benefits as you give to fasting. One cannot expect your
body to be healthy without first lowering your fasting insulin levels.
Mearly switching from a low
fat to a high
fat diet would not be exptected to be healthy.
Due to the study's design, the results may only reflect on how an unhealthy homomonal system reacts to higher than normal levels of
fat. It cannot be used to evaluate the safety or lack thereof of the
Atkins Diet.
