True in terms of overall calories, but doesn't it depend on what you use as a snack? Modern processed food snacks are very "more-ish" and portion control may go out the window.
Your point about TV and snacking is very true - a between meals snack to stave off hunger
must be portion controlled ( I get people to measure out their snacks
before they get hungry) and having the bag of peanuts on your lap while watching TV is not going to be a controlled portion!
So when you follow the weight loss advice you have to
- read between the lines and
- be honest about your own behaviour
