I wouldn't entirely agree with you on that one. A skilled hypnotist can, for example, make a person think they see something that doesn't exist or respond in certain ways they might not or might not want to under normal circumstances.
True, it couldn't make a person jump off a bridge or do some other overt act that was contrary to their wishes but.... on the other hand, anyone going to a hypnotherapist or using self-hypnosis CDs, would only be doing so because they wanted to have support in reaching an objective.
That's not to say, everyone using this method will succeed but, I think the failure would be more appropriately directed at the user and not hypnosis.
For example, if a self hypnosis CD instructed the person to listen to it every day for say.. two weeks, and the person only listened to it twice in the first week, was it the CD or the user who didn't "work"?
Just my opinion of course.
