Well, healthwise, it would be better to lose weight first. Better shape for the baby and you, less risk of getting gestational diabetes, etc. Also, from experience from having a c-section (it can happen, believe me!), it's a lot easier to heal from that if you have less of a stomach hanging over Trust me on that one.

If you're watching how you eat, and if you get activity in (walking is great when pregnant), you shouldn't gain a dangerous amount. I gained 20-25 lbs with each of my babies, and the babyweight came off within a few weeks of having them, mostly because I was nursing, I think.

Good luck! And talk to your doctor about it, please!

I will be honest. When I had my first little one I weighed 145 and now a year has gone by and I am at 195 (size 16). My husband and I are ready for baby number two. I have talked to my Doc about it and I am dieting and exercising now while I am trying to get pregnant and I will continue to eat healthy and do moderate exercise and walking while I am pregnant to reduce the chance of gaining too much weight. I suggest that if you are planning on having a baby soon to go ahead and try to lose weight the smart way. Eat healthy and 3-4 days a week of good exercise should be fine. You will be losing weight the right way while staying healthy enough to care for your self and your future little one. You will gain weight regaurdless when you get pregnant, but after you have had your baby just start walking ASAP!! That weight will come on off if you work at it in no time. AND don't eat for two. That is false. If you eat a normal healthy diet, your little one will get all the nutrients that they need.

Good luck!!

well, ok, this is my experiance. I was so thin (120 pds) before I got preg. w/ my 1st baby. I gained 40 pds from that pregnancy! I had cheesecake everyday. Then 5 yrs later, weighing 190 pds, we were going to have another one. WEll, I was concerned about my weight,so I just cut back, no excersize or what have you, and I managed to get through my whole pregnancy w/ only a 5 pd gain. So you can have a baby w/o all the extra pounds....also, my weight really didnt' effect my pregnancy or delivery at all, so, my advice is, have that baby! Life's too short.

Hi, Pauzzi-

Congrats on your recent marriage and planned adventure into momhood. I would not let your mom's (very rude and cruel) words discourage you from getting pregnant soon.

If you feel ready to become pregnant and it's a good time (ex- you and yours have been together a while so you have financial and emotional stability), spend the next few months-to-year getting your body healthy. That means getting into good habits--like getting good sleep schedule, learning to eat breakfast, taking vitamins, working on reducing any stress issues, and finding ways to exercise that you enjoy. You can also use this time to work on your weight if you feel uncomfortable about it. Be careful about not losing a lot at once, though (1.5 pounds a week), as you will be more likely to gain it back.

While I agree it is VERY easy to gain weight during pregnancy, it appears there are ways now to combat it. There is a lot of new literature that discusses ways to reduce/avoid the baby weight. This includes literature on nutrition, recipes, and exercises.

There appears to be a lot of myths cause baby fat. For instance, during the first trimester, most moms don't need to be eating more calories than they normally consume (the baby is microscopic). It's more important that you take the prenatal vitamins. I also remember reading that you don't need to double your calories as the little one you are supporting is not the size of a full grown human being. Also, it's okay to exercise while you are pregnant as long as it's not more heavy than you normally exercise. Sometimes there even are exercise classes offered through rec centers/colleges for moms-to-be.

Neat info on pregnancy and nutrition:

Lets just say hun i weighed way more then you when i was suprised with bub n2.
I belive as long as you are healthy and try hard to eat well and excersise who cares what others think.
I lost the weight i gained with bub n1 and i putit all back on and more and i was depressed cos i put it back on and more and i had worked so hard to get it off (thats just a honest point of veiw from my experiance).
Do what you feel is right and maybe talk to a doctor?

Best of luck in your choices and im sure whateer is ment to happen wil happen, nature has a funny way of doing things IYKWIM?

This was a great thread for me because I'm sort of in the same situation (I actually posted a thread but saw yours here and deleted mine lol). I am trying to conceive now but also trying to lose weight. I think that if you can, you should try to lose a little before but that also means having to wait. I personally don't feel I have a lot of time to spare so I'm doing both but trying to be really sensible about my activity level (no sudden changes) and eating.
