Need advice on where to start!

Hi, im 6"1 and weigh about 220 pounds, but i want to lose maybe 40 or 50. But i dont really know where to start. Ive recently been on medication for migraines, and a side effect of the medication is loss of appitite, so some days i really have to force myself to eat so that i get enough calories and dont end up eating just 900 or 1000. On average, the past month I think Ive eaten about 1100 calories a day. With plenty of vegetables and fruit. From what ive read on this forum i understand that i need more calories, before i will lose weight, but because my body has been so used to such a small amount of calories for months, if i increase to say, 1600, wont i put on weight, and not lose any?

I cant really include much info about the food i eat, because its so varied, but yesterday i ate:

Beakfast:Cereal, with a banana.
Lunch: Soup with 2 pieces of bread.
Dinner: Potatoe with beans and cheese.

The only excersize i get is that i run 3 miles twice a week.

If anyone could point me in the right direction i would really appriciate it!

If you really have been eating like this, at your size, you should be losing weight. Might not be the right kind of weight loss, but the number on the scale should be reducing. Is it?

If not, you are not eating 1100 calories consistently.

Your diet lacks most of the important components: Protein, good fats, enough veggies.

Thanks for your reply.

Well i noticed I am actually 5 or 6 pounds lighter than I was about 9 weeks ago. But my weight has been the same for the past 3 weeks. Do you think If I increase my calories gradually to about 1500, I will gain a bit of weight, then when my body gets used to it, eventually start losing weight? And yes, my diet definatly isnt consistent, some days I eat 900 calories, some days i can eat 1300. Could this be the problem?

What I am saying is this:

You are a big guy. A big guy requires a lot of energy to maintain that big frame. If you are really eating 1000-1100 calories each and every single day, you should be losing weight on a consistent basis. Even if your metabolism slowed down, which it surely did, it could not slow down so much in that your new maintenance level is 1000 calories at your size. Follow me?

Regardless, you shouldn't be eating so little. I would suggest gradually working your way back up to 2000-2500 cals. This isn't even your supposed maintenance, but it is a start. From there, start dieting sanely. And fixing your food selections.
