Could I lose 100 pounds in one year?

I was wondering if Steve or another informed person on the board could evaluate my stats and decide if I could lose 100 pounds in 12 months.

Height: 5'8"
Weight: 273

I would like to get down to 160 or so. So far I've lost 50 pound in 11 months. What do you think it would take to do it? Not that I need to lose it in year, I'm just curious if it would be possible.

Thanks for reading.

1% ofyour body weight is a reasonable goal to shoot for...

the higher the weightthe higher that 1 percent is...

I lost over 100lbs my first year but my starting weight was a lot higher.

By being consistent... in a years time, you might not hit 100lbs lost -but you'll be a lot closer to it than you are today... and why settle for a specific number - go with how you're feeling and what you see in the mirror...

According to the 1% weight loss per week rule of thumb, you could do it. However, that is an ideal - you will most likely hit plateaus, go on vacation, regress a little, etc. But looking at your past weight loss, I think you should be really proud of the 50 lbs loss over 11 months and be happy if that happens again!

Unfortunatley we are all different sizes, have less active or more active lives, do lots of exersiz,e or not eat healthy or not so much etc etc. 100lbs is easily reachable within a year depending on comitment and motivation. You have to give 100% and nothing less. Yes there should be times for holidays and such but it's all a part of being sensible and eating healthy. There are plateaus and binges, boredum and fustration.

At the end of the day you have to visualise the real reason why you want to loose weight and stick to it. 100lb in a year is not out of reach if you really want it.

I do lots of walking - and various other keep fit classes too. I eat tons of really healthy food - which is certainly not too low in calories (I am currently averaging about 1600 calories a day and that is deep into my long term project).

I lost over 100 pounds in my first year - but I did stay focused for the entire time. I didnt take holidays and managed to keep tight control of my food and exercise levels over things like Christmas.

I think that you can do it. Having said that - I thoroughly agree with what the others have written about the fact that you should feel great about your achievements to date - and whatever loss that you get over the next year will make you so much nearer the person that you want to be.

I can say that I continue to work as hard as ever but my rate of weight loss has certainly slowed down over the months. In the past I have had months where I lost 14 pounds - now I can be lucky to get 5 pounds by working just as hard. Please prepare yourself mentally for this kind of slowdown as I would hate you to get disheartened and give up. I sometimes think that there is no logic behind the rate at which our weight changes - all that we can do is work as hard as possible and hope that the change happens soon. That has worked for me so far!

I lost so far 66 lbs in 10 months and that was with an insane amount of work! I think 100 in a year is a lot for the numbers you threw out there. But, if you are in for all of the work and determined to keep it off, I think it's not too far off!

Good luck!

I know I gained that much in less than a year...

haha.

I think you could do it, but you would require a lot of exercise. If you did it by calories alone, you'd be miserable.

Yeah, I think you could. I started out ~75 pounds lighter than you and was losing pretty consistently at about 15 pounds every 2 months until the very end. Like Margaret, I stayed on-plan the entire time, with no breaks for holidays / birthdays / weekends. I started to get pretty grumpy about 8 months in, so sticking it out for an entire year would have been difficult for me. (Although if I'd had a year's worth of weight to lose, it might not have been - it started to get hard for me about the time my BMI got below 25.)

Good words all throughout this thread.

While you're carrying a good bit of fat yet, the 1% rule certainly applies. Once you drop below 200 (this can vary depending) things can get a lot stickier, but cross that bridge once you get to it.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who replied. I recently pushed through a 4 month plateau and have dropped into the 260's. I bought a mountain bike and I've been riding it 3 miles to the gym to lift weights and back home. I LOVE riding a real bike! =)
