ive started to build up to running. ive never done it but when i was young and quite fit i used to be able to run about and plat football for hours. now ive got too much weight and hardcore asthma to fight. i started off a few days ago, walking round the jungle trail in the hills behind me. the next day i felt an urge to run. i got knackered after about 20 metres but its the first time ive run in years. later on in the walk i slowly jogged all the way down the trial for about a mile with small little steps (because i dont hae trainers, i was doing it barefoot) im gonna do it again today. small steps, take my time doing it. so hopefully ill be able to boast about runing properly sometime soon

OMG Rimay, 10 K. Go girl!!!

Curvie Girlie : 8 min/mile, wow!! Sounds like you are training hard!! You are such and inspiration!!

Wishes: I usually go to a specialty running store and try on different kinds of shoes to see which one is better. (I already know that I am a "neutral runner"). Then I write down the ones I liked and go online. I can get them sometimes 50 % cheaper than in the store. I bought Asics last time, it was $85.00 in the store and I bought it for like $40+tax.

Because of the heat and because I can't work out in the morning, I had to run on a treadmill this weekend but I enjoyed it. I ran 2.5 miles with a speed of 4.2mi/hr (14.30 min/mile, I know I am slow ), and then I increased the speed in 1/4 mile increments for the next mile until I reached 5.5mi/hr for my last 1/4 mile. It was my mini HIIT training. I am planning to do this for a while and hoping it will help increasing my speed, although I am happy as long as I am running.
My heart rate monitor arrived this weekend and happy to say that it is working great and even with the slow running I do my heart rate is well at the aerobic traning zone for me.
Well, it took me a great 9 months to finally enjoy exercising and now it is part of my everyday schedule as before I found all the excuses a i could get to avoid it. I like running because it can be done anywhere as long as I have my sneakers with me, does not need equipment and gym memberships and it burns more calories with less time.
The lbs are not dropping as fast as I would like them to but a recent bloodwork confirmed (even overweight) that I am extremely healthy (my doctor's words.)
I am having strenghtraining today and run tommorrow.

Yes, I had asthma, too, and sometimes I wonder about it. for example, when I'm racing I find I breathe much harder than the people around me, going at about the same speed. I wonder if i still have it, if it affects me. I think that even an asthmatic (depending on the severity) can run--it's like you think, you just have to keep doing it and see what happens (as long as you don't keel over, I'm no doctor!!)

You're doing a great job and your enthusiasm is really heart-lifting! I admire ANYONE who can enjoy a treadmill. I cannot do it--i just can't. Good for you!!

yeah asthmatics can run. but you have to build up to it. my asthma is allergy triggered, and im currently in asia away from home. over here i dont come into contact with my allergens, so the last 2 months have been heaven, having my lungs back to myself. im going home to london next tuesday. so i have a week to try and get as much excercise in as possible as when i get home its back to wheezing and crying all the time cos of the dust and car fumes if you excercise more it increases your lung capacity, so the asthma doesnt seem as bad as it is as theres "more room to breathe"

how did yours go? i take it you had it when you were young a lot of people "grow out of it" i suddenly got mine on NYE last year at age 20! weird.

I know how it is. Terrible! I live in the mountains, and SC's air is really, really clean-used to live in a valley and I was miserable, here I'm only miserable May and June

Makes sense! Mine was allergy induced, too--at night in the spring I had to "sleep" sitting up with a humidifyer--and of course I was coughing the whole time. Man I hate my overactive immune system!!

HI foreveryoung, welcome to the club!

I ran today outside and boy I regret it. It was way too hot, and I could only do 3 miles even that I set my mind on 4. I even had to stop at 2 miles to drink water. And I did miserably with time, 43 minutes. Oh well, teaches me a lesson.
I do feel good about not giving up and at least do the 3 miles!! I know I will see the results and it is all worth it.!!!!
Here is to a better run next time.

Hey "Hajni", that's great that you went running despite the heat!

I don't know where "Stanfordville" is but I do know that where I live, it is very foggy and starting to sprinkle a bit. I'm slightly bummed because I was not able to run (or exercise at all) today--was busy pouring wine at a restaurant in Los Gatos. But tomorrow I may run 6.1 miles in the woods through Pogonip. According to my book, training to get faster includes:

Day of sprints
Day of rest (can weight train)
Day of hill runs (basically running uphill, on trails are ok)
Easy run
Long run
Day of rest

Wow that's only 6 days, ok I'm missing something--my book is downstairs. I really feel very guilty, I should be pouring out knowledge I learned from my booky-book (not like it's gospel but it may help people on this thread, who knos!)--instead I'm slacking off and not paying enough attention to the thread! Well anyway, thanks to those who keep it alive and I will always try, I LOVE to run (because I used to HATE to run and I conquered that.)

Anyway, Wharf to Wharf (S.C. to Capitola, 6 miles) Race is coming soon. July 28th. Time to get FAST. I want to place--which is hard because 10 thousand people show up and it's hard to get in front. IF I get in the top 100 women I get a T-shirt--and I promised my male housemate (who is kinda big--200 lbs and 5'9" with very broad shoulders) I'd give him my shirt--he said "try to get an X-tra Large" and I said I don't even know if they make that size for the situation, but I'll try.

Goodnight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rimay2k is on a distinguished road
I really need to get a running book.Tomorrow is a run day and I am going to try to time my run and see if I am improving any.
I did not excercise today because I overslept. If I dont do it in the morning I wont do it unless the weather is good-then I would go on a long walk.
I am trying to do at least 1 run a month.
This month is the summer night run 5K
august 25 is the womens run 5K
I am hoping to improve my time from run to run and then move on to a 10k.
I am not fast so I know I will more than like never place especially when I look at the run times from previous years for the females-18 minutes and times like that
I will eventually look for someone to run with though simply because i know I am not pushing myself to my limits.I signed up to mapmyrun.com and I even found out some of my routes that I ran were actually longer than I thought so thats even better so I may not be as slow as I think I am
Dh said he will pay my entrance fee in every race because he likes that I found something that I like to do.YAY!!!! I told him my goal for the future is to finish 1 Boston marathon.Being from Boston I always watched the marathon and I even thought in the back of my mind wow I would love to do that one day but I never ran so I thought it would never be a reality.I think I feel the happiness that I have been feeling everytime I put on my running shoes it will be a reality it might be a few years from now but it will happen.

I'm sneaking into this running club .

My goal is three miles without walking at all by the end of summer. And 3 miles in 30 min in six months.

So far, I'm running twice a week and just passed my one mile in under 10 min two weeks ago. I'm building up to two miles right now.

Running club.... Cool!

I am a big fan of running now and find myself even on days where I fully plan on walking instead of running picking up speed till I am running anywas. Last week it was in the massive pouring rain while people indoors wondered what kind of freak I was. Yesterday it was +42 degrees celcius, a temperature last year I would have hated standing in let alone moving. But these days I find with such high heat and humidity I am less comfortable walking than running because at least running creates airflow and gets me home sooner. I can now do my commute home everyday in the blistering heat in 20-25 minutes (5Km) when it took me over an hour on the bus or subway.

What more can I say than running is good.... Damn Good!

And my legs have never looked so good!

sirant

Great job you girls!~

Running update: (we can do that, right?)

Yesterday I rode my bike to Harvey West Park....let me see, that is 4 miles--one of those is on a perilous road with no bike lane! Anyway, I got there and then ran my usual route through Pogonip for 6.1 miles. If I mentioned before there is an 800 ft elevation gain. There're also a lot of rocks in the trail! I actually concentrated and thought about my legs as I ran--and my feet. I was actually concentrating on not over-pronating.

(Overpronation explained by Runnersworld)

Anyway, a yellow jacket crept into my little sock and STUNG my lower outer ankle. It is itchy today--I flicked the bastard out and continued running, hoping I wasn't deathly allergic.

I've been stung by a regular bee once and I wasn't allergic--the stinger stayed in, then, of course (until I pulled it out).

I then rode home. SO: 6.1 miles ran, 8 miles rode. It was beautiful weather and from Pogonip I could see all of Monterey Bay.

Work 2 jobs today, did the elliptical at 6:30am this morning for 55 minutes.

Siriant, I'm SOOOO jealous of those times! 5 km... that last third alone would probably take me 15 min.

Curvie Girlie, after that bike ride... I'd have been in no shape for running! Awesome.

That is AWESOME, you are a PIMP, I ran 5K in 21 minutes and that was as fast as I could go--and it wasn't even HOT!!!!!!!

Yes, I love my legs although I went through a short spree of wishing they were thinner, I have come to terms with that silly wish! Keep up the great running, Sirant!

Doesn't that make you jealous?!?!

Thank you, it has tajen me years to get to where I'm at, but it wouldn't have taken so long if I hadn't pushed myself earlier. Really, it's very mental--I think, "Well I can only do this," and I'm actually wrong and I can do more--i just have to try!!!

Update:

Bee sting swollen and painful, nasty-looking "kankle."

I'm going to lift weights today, and tomorrow I'll pray that my reaction stops reacting and I can run. Stupid effing yellowjacket!!!!!

Sat I'll try to do sprints at the High School track, and afterward I'lll run at Fall Creek, which I THINK is about 4 miles in the woods, uphill and downhill--then I'll try to ride my bike to the brewery. I really want to step up my fitness and would like to put at least 2 hours into it as many days of the week as I can.

I'm moving the end of this month, hopefully I'll get a place closer to work so I can ride my bike!
