Weight Watchers?

Anyone try that here? I heard alot of things about it being really good and working well but is it expensive and worth it?

Now I know everyone is going to have a different opionion, but my own experiance was this...

the price was like $12/wk (which on my budget was a bit high) and everyone would clap and be so excited (in a fake way almost) for everyone that lost even a pound. I dont' know, had a real weird feel to it and I personally didn't feel that they taught me anything I didn't already know about weight loss.

BUT I do know that there are other people that have gone and liked it, so you'll have to try it yourself to be sure.

ive done weight watchers three times, and ive always lost weight with it, but i find (this may just be the one i went to) that its really high pressure, and competitive. I would get into a pattern of not eating the whole day before the weigh in and then bingeing for two days after. But thats just me..

sydney - i agree with you. the meetings i used to go to were very highly competitive. there was a woman who used to go to my meetings who would weigh herself nude (behind closed doors of course) then weight her clothes so she knew exaclty how much she weighed when she jumped on the scales in front of the group. i also found it to be quite bitchy and if u had a "bad week" that would look down on you. the pressure could sometimes be intense and i too found myself resorting to starving myself the day before then binging the day after.... sooo not worth it.

Newbride - yeah i too know people who have enjoyed it but it really wasnt for me in the end. My sister for example has lost 25kgs doing the Weight Watchers program

Thumbs up

Well my Mom did it about 4 years ago and lost almost 70 pounds and we just started it again. For us it's been an amazing program to help us lose weight. I think it's good. :]

Hi there,

It's a program with it's pros and cons like any other. For me it worked well because the Points idea made sense to me. Once I started realizing how high Points my choices were it just kind of gelled it for me. I lost 55 lbs. and have kept 30 of it off for four years now.

However that being said, I didn't like the meetings that much. I've had a few good leaders which help but when you go by yourself I often times don't find the group to be very welcoming to newcomers. It's a hard enough to decision to decide you need help and that you can't do it on our own and then when you walk in and sit beside a stranger and try to say hi, it doesn't help the self esteem when you can't seem to connect and make a meeting buddy there.

If you have a good support system in place outside of meetings, perhaps do what I have done and join for the first three weeks or so to get the booklets, points slider and exercise points booster slider and then do it from home.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Hi

I just started it 3 days ago -unofficially - not going to meetings - just using the points system...so far it's the hardest diet I've ever had to stick to - and I have been sticking to the points system...one thing I do like about it is that it DOES teach you how to make good choices during the day - just changing my egg breakfast to egg white, and my english muffin to whole grain bread makes all the difference

I'm also using weight wachers. I haven't joined this time but I am following the points as well. I always find that it works so well for me as long as I stick to it. My problem is always following the points and tracking them. I have a habit of get lazy and stopping.

However I want this so badly I seem to keep putting myself back on track again and again. I started in February and have lost 15lbs so far. It is very slow but for me the longer it takes the easier it is for me to adjust and that means that I will have less trouble maintaining my goal weight.

I also find that the points make sense to me. I know how many points I have in a day and I select them wisely.

I find that getting past the 3 day mark is the most difficult. Oh I also find that I allow myself a free day the day I weigh in. If there was something I was craving through the week I allow myself to have it without counting points for that day. It really helps me get through the week knowing I have a free day comming up. The key is only allowing yourself one free day, otherwise you will not lose weight.

Keep up the good work.

Knowing there are others on weight watchers is helpful.

Weight watchers question

Okay you know on the slider guide where there is the dietary fibre part? On the label of the food does this include the number for fibre as well or just anything that shows dietary fibre? The reason I ask is one of my weaknesses in the summer is sunflower seeds. They are awesome for fibre but bad for fat. Any input on this would be appreciated.

Almost all food labels, at least in the US, I'm not sure about Canada, have underneath the carbohydrates portion of the label, the amount of fiber in a single serving, some items (like high fiber cereals)will also include Soluable fiber which i think is a little beter fiber because it doesn'tb reak down it just goes thru your system takingsome bad stuff along the way.

Fat is also listed and under fat is Saturated fat, and i think poly unsaturated fat and transfats as well.. the trans fats are the really bad ones...

Looking up sunflower seeds on nutritiondata.com

In one ounce therea re 175 calories, 16 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated fat, and 3 grams of fiber. Nutrition Data is of the opinion that it's better for weight gain than weight loss. they only gave it 2 stars for weight loss and 3 1/2 for weight gain... So they are good for you and they are healthy, but if you are using them as a low calorie snack, there are probably better options.

Though honestly in looking further at it - their nutrional data is really no different from that of dry roasted almonds and almonds are usually suggested as a snack for people watching their weight...

I think like anything else - in moderation - they are fine...

I would love to follow the points system as well, since I can't afford going to weekly meetings. Is there an online resource where I can see what points I would need in a day, and how to calculate points? I tried the WW website but that also costs.. I believe they want 30-60 dollars just to sign up x_x help!

unfortunately, it is a business and they are not going to give their information away without money!!!

i've been on weighwatchersfor just over 2months now, and i'm finding it excellent. i've lost 19 1/2 pounds so far. i don't find the meetings bitchy and i have a fantastic leader. the only thing that is a bit odd is the smiley-happy attitude. but i definately find that i need to stay to the meetings to stay on track. i was on it a few years ago and got to goal, but all the weight came back, and then some. i'm confidant this time that when i do get to goal, i'll maintain it. i plan to give myself half a stone breathing space and just not allow myself to get out of it. someone else above mentioned the junk food type day- it's a great idea that i have been indulging in this time round. it's my chocolate day and really helps you cope with the rest of the week!

Try your local library or bookstore for some of the weight watchers books... the points system just seems to be an easier way of counting calories...
