Rep Power: 0 | | | Being on Cohen's and illness? Hi all,
I've been reading these forums for a few weeks now but this is my first post. My mother started the program last Thursday and all has been going well so far. She hasn't suffered from hunger at all, only a few minor headaches at times but that is all under control. The only problem she is facing is a sore throat which started on Friday and is now a little worse.
Obviously it takes the body some time to get used to eating so little so I'm guessing the reduced intake of food has weakened her immune system. She hasn't deviated at all yet. She is also drinking a few cups of green, chamomile and peppermint tea a day to ease the soreness.
Has anyone else had similar symptoms or suffered from other illnesses while on the program? She is yet to go see the doctor and will probably do so tomorrow if it isn't any better? If it gets worse should she remain on the program or stop it until she is better? Note: I have posted this on another Cohen's board so I apologise for the double post

Your poor mum it's ashame this had to occur so early into the programme.
1st point - Do check with your consultant.
2nd point - Is your mum taking all her recommended multivitamins?
This has really helped me I am prone to falling sick when I go on diets but with Cohen's I started taking all my mv's straight away and also doubled the dose as recommneded by my clinic and so far I have had no colds & flu's.
But that isn't helping your mum right now.
If you are able to help your mum you could make soups or puree the food so it makes it easy to swallow. Your mum can also take panadol or nuerofen.
But if you mum has flu like symptoms well she will have to wave the diet until she is feeling better.
The other thing is no cough lozengers or syrups allowed.
Find out what your Doctor say's first and if it only a viral then you should be able to stick with the plan with some help.
Hope this helps.
Get well soon.
Sam

Thank you for your feedback and tips.
1. I will be speaking to my mother's consultant tomorrow to check.
2. Yes, she is taking her daily prescribed multi-vitamin (Blackmores).
Her throat has actully started getting better since I first posted so I'm hoping with a good night sleep it will be gone by the morning.
Just a point regarding double-dosing on the multi-vitamins. From what I've read a while back, I recall someone saying that more is not better. Your body uses what it needs and flushes out the rest (you probably notice this when you go to the toilet soon after ). There could also be adverse effects in exceeding the recommended daily dosage for certain vitamins/minerals. It may be ok doing this for short periods when you are sick but I wouldn't be doing it on a continual basis. I'm no expert so I would check with your doctor.
Thanks once again for your help.

Rep Power: 0 | | | I also got a flu type thing within 2 weeks of starting. I usually get sore throats so wasn't too worried at first but ended up spending 4 days in bed. It seemed to really floor me, which isn't usual. I did go to the dr and he gave me antibiotics and since them have felt much better.
I just put it down to a low immune system cos my body was so stressed by eating healthy and so much less.

Hi Ozi
Glad your mum is feeling better hopefully it will pass fairly quickly.
And regards to the vit/mins my consultant only recommended it for the intial first few weeks and I think that is to give the body enough time to adjust to the reduced and restrictive amounts of food. I used it up to my 4 week weigh in.

I just spoke to the consultant at the clinic and she said my mother can take the following lozenges:
BIOGLAN - RAPID ACTION THROAT-CLEAR Throat Clear Product - Pretorius Australia
They are sugar free.

Rep Power: 0 | | | Sore throat Hi! I am sorry to hear about your Mum's sore throat. I always get sore throats - they are terrible!!! What I have found as the best thing for getting rid of them is to gargle some aspro clear. I'm not on Cohen's so I'm not sure if aspro is allowed, but while I was pregnant I couldn't have it, so used Soluble Panadol instead. That worked just as well - it just didn't taste so good
Hope your Mum's sore throat gets better soon. If she does feel she needs to go off the program, maybe just have an extra orange or slightly more meat and vegies so that she doesn't lose the effects of Ketosis and doesn't have to go through the carb withdrawals again. Hopefully she'll be able to stick with the program though.
Cheers,
Linda

Thanks for the advice. It should all be fine as I have bought her some BIOGLAN lozenges.
I tend to get sore throats as well at times so I'll try the aspro clear tip next time!

Rep Power: 0 | | | Being on Cohen's and illness Hi,
I have been on Cohen's for a week. On the 4th day, I developed a sorethroat, fever and flu. Does anyone know what causes this to happen?

I guess as much...I've been battling this flu, fever and sorethroat thing for 6 days and is feeling better now.
The good news is that in 8 days on Cohen's I've lost 4kgs! Yippee!
