Dweller At The Threshold

A bit of a long post folks but i hope some of you will be able to take some insight from this knowledge and help you over com ethe DWELLER!!

In life we all at some point will start a new hobby, task or plan of action that will ultimately lead to change. For example, every body here has been are currently on a diet. Changing the way we eat, restricting the sugar and/or fat we consume. Ultimately this is to reduce our weight and/or become healthier. We have many reasons why we diet, most of which you can read in a post here on the forum.
Regardless of the reason it takes discipline and will power. We need to stick to diet to reach our goals. It is at times like these that we meet our “Dweller At The Thresh Hold” That voice of reason that gives us excuses to break our diet or not go to your lesson or group meeting. The Dweller tells us perfectly good reasons why we should stay at home or eat some thing we shouldn’t!

The scenario I am about to describe will probably sound familiar to some thing in your own life or some one around you.
Every Thursday evening I attend a kind of study group. When I started this group we have a full room of members. Every one enthusiastic about what we will learn and how things can be applied to our lives out side this group. Over the weeks we went from a group of around 20 people to a group of around 8 to 10 people turning up every week. Now 3 years on we have a core group of about 5 people, and have many people come and go in the mean time. People had given up and weren’t prepared to do the work involved. The Dweller gave them reasons why they didn’t have to go every week or do the work asked of us. “You have been rushed of your feet this week, you should rest tonight!”………. “Missing one night wont hurt, you will catch up!”

It’s the same with a diet. We start off very eager and ready to do what we need to do to change out lives for the better! We get our scales we have our diet plans and for the first few days, weeks and for some even months we stick to our diets until all of a sudden a little voice pops into our heads. This voice seems to be very wise and reasonable…. “Well one piece of cake won’t hurt and I will start again tomorrow”…… “Well its only a small amount of extra cheese, your allowed cheese!”….. “You have been very busy today and really should eat some thing more fulfilling tonight”. Before we know it we are discussing in our heads why we should or shouldn’t cheat. The moment we give into this Dweller is the begging of the end with most of us!

In analytical psychology this is known as the ‘Shadow’. There will be moments in anyone’s life that we feel frustrated, overwhelmed with ‘fatigue’ or get ‘bored’ with the commitments we’ve made and if we give in to these feelings, it will be the beginning of the end. Not being able to conquer this moment of gloom, we often end up giving up entirely on something we started out so enthusiastically with. Our eyes that had been opened will slowly start to close themselves. Succumbing to the lullaby song with the soothing voice of the ‘Dweller’.

In many ‘mystery schools’ this phenomena is well known and taken in account when considering new applications for membership. The reasoning behind this is that if we already succumb to the voice of the Dweller in our mundane lives, we will also succumb when we are working on a spiritual level. This from an esoteric point of view is dangerous’.
So, who is this Dweller, Watcher or Guardian?
The ‘Dweller’ is our ‘passive/negative’ self. It is associated with the planet Saturn. Some occultists will call it ‘the dead man or woman within us’. Dead associated with dissolution, the opposite of creation. This ‘Guardian of the Threshold’ in some cases will come across as somebody benevolent, and its words are wise. It will tell the individual that he or she should take a rest, because they are so tired or it will convince the student that this ‘new’ thing that they are learning is not for them. It is far too complicated or it will tell them that they haven’t got the time to study or practice.

The ‘Guardian’ will try to convince the student that it isn’t their fault but that is because of somebody else, either responsibilities for a family member, an employer or a tutor but... never the ‘self’. If realization does occur that it isn’t any of the above, it will start to attack a person’s self-confidence and make them question their capability of learning or doing something new.

As Carl Jung describes, the single source for this is ‘FEAR’. The human mind and personality often fear and resist change.
(Yvonne Welch. The Source Society)

I believe that when starting some thing new such as a diet, we can benefit from knowing that we have this shadow self waiting to trip us up and make us fall. Knowing this information gives us more strength to ignore the voice that we once thought was benevolent and continue to work towards our own goals of a slimmer healthier future.

Will you conquer your Dweller at the Threshold?

Thanks Niyah.....
It might be strange but being aware of the "Dweller" does help when you get these thoughts of "Oh its just one cake....." and so on!! Thinking of the dweller as a separate entity helps as its not “you" saying these things then its some one else and it can be easier to ignore some one else than it is yourself!!!
Every time you get these thoughts, hopefully you will think of the dweller and hopefully find it easier to ignore him!!!

Thanks again Niyah!
