Unhappy I'm a new mom of a 4 month old with no weight loss :(

Let me start off by saying in the few years prier to getting pregnant I'd started off at 225 lbs and had gotten down to 130 lbs and just before I'd gotten pregnant I was about 145 lbs b/c I was traveling and eating a lot of pb & j sandwiches.

So I got pregnant and being anemic and on bed rest toward the end of my pregnancy I gained 70 lbs! Yeah, I'm not happy about it. Elizabeth is almost 5 months and I've only lost the initial 15 lbs and no matter what I do I can't seem to stop eating. I'm hungry all the time and I don't eat the right stuff b/c I talk myself out of it and I'm tired. I'm so frustrated I don't even know where to start now. Since I'm breastfeeding and have had a difficult time keeping my supply up I'm afraid to change my diet. Again I'm frustrated. I'm determined to lose it but I really don't know who to talk to about this since on top of everything I've just moved out of state with my husband and know maybe a handful of people.

I don't want to vent, but I'm just feeling overwhelmed by this. I feel like all I need is someone other than my husband telling me that I can do this, b/c my mom just tells me that I will start dropping the weight soon. I don't know if I gained all this weight b/c I used to weigh so much, I mean it wasn't like I was sitting there eating an entire package of oreo's or junk food either. (sounds like i've got a lot of excusses)

Help!

some women are lucky and can lose the baby weight just by breathing. other women(like you and me) have to actively work for it. I didn't start losing weight after my youngest was born until she was 4 1/2 months old. at that point I really cracked down on myself, started measuring out individual servings of food and exercising. I'm not saying it's easy, and you probably won't lose the weight without some kind of change. But it IS possible.

hey momma! i hear ya... my girl is now 4 1/2 months old and JUST 2 weeks ago i actually started loosing weight ...

hang in there.. some women loose it right after birth, and some, like me (and you maybe one of them too) loose it by time... be patient..

i know what you mean, when you say you just CANT eat different and you just have to eat that much aso. i've been there... i haven't changed my eating habits ... but i started working out at the fitness center... with that, it came all by itself.. i felt bad when i eat shiploads of chocolate cause i KNEW how much it would take to get down to the calories...

and yes, you are right. it IS possible. The last 2 weeks I lost 12lbs.. Just doing... Nothing but what I did before, and a little work out (really just a little work out..)

Try to do some sports where you can see the calories you burn.... That helped me a lot. And the next time you see the calories your eating you think twice if its truly worth it ;-)

Good luck mommy!!!

Thanks Ladies! If all it takes right now to lose something I can easily climb on my elliptical machine and start moving.

I really thank you for the support

Weight loss after pregnancy is possible, but it requires some realism, patience, and a lot of work. It is reasonable to assume that it may take a new mom about 8 months to a year to get back into fighting form. This is losing a sensible 1-2 pounds per week. It would be wise to not lose any more weight than that, because it could be unhealthy. Losing the baby weight can take longer, because every body is different, so don’t get discouraged if you are losing weight at a slower rate than other new moms you know.

Here are a few tips for getting rid of the excess weight after pregnancy:

* Don’t diet for the first three months postpartum. Start out by just eating a well-balanced diet and moving your body. Once your menstrual cycle normalizes, you can follow a sensible weight-loss program if you feel that you need to.
* Start out slow with exercise. If you didn’t exercise during your pregnancy, don’t jump into a vigorous routine right away. Your body is still healing, and it needs time to adjust to the new movements. Start by taking walks around the block with your baby. Walking is an excellent (and low-impact) way to get your body primed for more vigorous exercise at a later date when your body can handle it.
* Eat several small, healthy meals a day. This keeps your energy up, especially if you are breastfeeding, as well as keeps your metabolism primed.
* Store healthy and fresh foods in your kitchen. Try to avoid highly processed and fatty foods. In other words, back away from the chips and dips! Eating plenty of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products will not only help you lose weight, but it will also stick with you longer.
* Be patient. Though it might seem like other new moms are able to lose their postpartum weight right away, keep in mind that every woman’s body is different. If you eat right and exercise regularly, the weight will come off!
* Most importantly, seek advice from your doctor before changing your diet or starting any new exercise program!

I don't anyone who has lost their baby weight without hard work or a balanced lifestyle. Even the girls that some people assume just drop the weight, I believe they are either quite active or eat balanced and healthy meals.

Anyway, it is possible. And the great thing is you can look even better than before you had your baby/babies.

You need to think long term. This is not going to happen in a month or two. So visualize yourself in exactly one years time. Visualize achieving your desired weight. And accept it. That's when it will be, so just make it happen.

Then plan everything. Your meals, your exercise. If you have other children, chores and responsibilities draw up a routine/calendar. Plan, plan, plan.

Be accountable, keep a food diary and maybe even an emotional health journal to vent in, celebrate it etc.

Find and put up photos of you looking incredible. Look at them every single day. Say over and over and over and over as you exercise that you can do it.

Treat one day at a time. If you mess up, make ammends. Go for a walk or start fresh at the next meal or day.

You can do it!

I feel the same way. My third is almost 4 months old. I haven't gotten serious about weight loss until now. I feel like I should already be at my goal weight, but I know that's not realistic. I hadn't lost all my weight from my 2nd pregnancy and was still breastfeeding him when I got pregnant this time. Sometimes I get discouraged, but it helps to know that other people are struggling with me.

You can do this. Just give yourself time. I have 63 pounds to lose, and I feel the same as you do. It will get easier, but it does take time. Breastfeeding is great for buring calories, but at the same time, your body hold onto some of the fat to help supply your milk. I read that somewhere, and it seems to be true for me. I couldn't start steadily losing weight until I was weaning my second. Hang in there because you are going to change the way you're body looks. The weight will come off, just keep at it and you will succeed.

Don't be too hard on yourself. For me, breastfeeding made it actually harder to lose weight. It took me about 15 months to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight after my 2nd baby.. But I did get there, eventually and I'm sure you will too. Just keep working at it. Good luck!

For some Breastfeeding can make you not lose weight. That is the case with me. When I try to monitor my calories by milk supply drops low and I have to up my calories. Besides the fact that it makes me so hungry. What is weird is with my first I never had this problem and I breastfeed him till he was 8 mo old. Anyway just try to exercise and eat good (no dieting per se) and then when you are done breastfeeding you will have established, healthy habits that will help you lose the weight.

A friend of mine is breast feeding her child and she is so skinny too bad I didn't do it and now forget it, my little bean is crazy about her bottle. So, I have to sweat it off, not having a great week though

Oh boy! The post-baby madness. This is one of the hardest things for a woman to deal with. For me, I was pregnant at the same time two of my skinny mini friends were and both of them went home from the hospital in their pre-pregnancy clothes! My little bug is 9 months old and although I have reached the pre-preggers weight I still don't have the same shape or body. I told myself that I can't focus on the numbers..I just need to focus on being healthy. They say the weight comes off once we stop stressing about it, so I hope in combination of a good work out plan and healthy eating I will see more results. We are in this together mama!

Breastfeeding affects women's weight loss differently, so some lose lots whilst they do it, others stay the same but then it drops off when they stop. However, you cannot count on the latter happening, so the best thing would be to take steps to lose the weight now. It is safe to lose a pound a week whilst breastfeeding and this should not impact on your supply. Just make sure that what you do eat is healthy stuff, full of nutrients, and take a multivitamin designed for breastfeeding mums.

I put on about 46 pounds during pg. I lost about 18-20 just with baby, water etc. From when my son was 1 month old until now, 7 months later, I have lost 34 lbs. I was back at my pre-preg weight when he was 4-5 months old, and am now about 9-10 lbs below that. (if my numbers don't add up it is because I work in kg and the conversions may beslightly off)

How?

I stick to a healthy diet. I normally have a small bowl of branflakes with skimmed milk or poached eggs on dry toast for breakfast. Lunch will be something like a ham salad sandwich (no butter or mayo - perhaps a little cheese if I am feeling hungry). Dinner will be something like grilled chicken with pasta/rice and veg (either roast or stirfried in a little oil, steamed or a salad). Snacks are fruit, yogurt (great for your calcium!). I have the odd treat too, normally have cake or something at least once a week. And I have a home made latte with skimmed milk every morning around 11, with one small teaspoon brown sugar. That is my daily treat! I wait for my son to go down for his mid morning nap and I make it. Heaven!

Every few weeks I track my calorie intake on a website where you can do a food diary (there are many around which are free to use). I stay to the limit they recommend for me (1600 kcals per day) but added 500 kcals per day when DS was 100% breastfed, but now he is having three solid meals too I add 300 kcals.

I also walk lots! 5-7 miles per day. That is all the exercise I get as I am alone with my two kids most of the time (DH works abroad) so it is hard to get time for structured exercise.

Some weeks I lose more, other less and some I even gain. But on average it has been 0.8 lbs per week, and my milk supply is still going strong and my little boy is doing really well! I did not start giving him solids until he was 6 1/2 months.

This is just what works for me. Try it out and if you still don't lose you have to up your exercise. It does not have to mean hours on the treadmill - even doing the housework counts!

Good luck! Don't lose sight of the goal - you will get there!
