Smile The new girl from Wisconsin

Hi everyone. I'm 27, female, and a nursing student (well i'm taking the nursing assistant class but i'm working towards my ultimate goal of having a BS in nursing).

I've been overweight for most of my life and I was bigger than most of my friends but my asthma kept me from being as athletic as other kids and the weight kept going up as I got older. The last 10 years have been the worst since I hit the 200 mark in my early 20s and now I'm getting dangerously close to 300 and I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THAT NUMBER ON MY SCALE EVER!(well it only goes up to 270 anyway).

A year ago I lost my husband to cancer and I have not taken as good a care of myself as I should have and that is why I have finally decided that enough is enough. I'm at risk for too many health problems and I don't want them to interfere with my new career goals. I can't be an effective caregiver to my patients if I'm too out of shape to take care of them. Plus I know my husband would be worried about me if he were still here - and I promised him before he died that I would take care of myself after he goes.

I've never been successful with diets because I go too fast and give up too soon. I realize I need some kind of support and so I decded to join this forum for the comraderie and to vent or get advice. I also got a meal plan from the the Mayo clinic so I know my daily calorie goal and servings and serving sizes.

Thanks for patiently reading all this. I hope to get to know more of you and wish you the best.

Ciao,
Maria

Hi madophelia,

I think you are very brave and losing weight is the hardest thing I have ever embarked on.....I am doing the cohen diet as it has fast results and that is the only way i stick to it.....I am also a nurse and a midwife. Getting things right before you start shift work is imperitive as that is when I put on my weight when I began full time shift work...Good luck....

Welcome to the site, Ophelia but just a word of caution - if you're usig the Mayo Clinic Diet Plan that's been on the internet since the beginning of time -it's not the diet plan by the famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minn.. It's nothig more than a too low calorie fad diet... Please make sure you're using a sensible eating plan that gives you enough calories during the day

Thank for the advice. Actually I went to the Mayo Clinic website looking for info on MS for a report i'm doing for my class. I saw they had some info on diet and nutrition and that is where i got my info from - what is the fad diet thing about?

Thanks for the welcome everyone! I am having a good day so far - and right now I think my goal is just being really aware of my choices - and to not eat mindlessly. I'm glad I found this forum.

Beverly - where in Wisconsin are you? I'm in Madison and grew up here but will eventually move to Milwaukee to do the rest of my nursing school stuff there.

Ciaol everyone!

-Maria
