New to the forums looking to get healthy

Hi all,
I'm a 29 yo male, married, and living in California currently. I'm 6'3-6'4 and weight 280 or so. I've had liver problems and high blood pressure. Obesity runs on my dad's side (though he himself is slim). Diabetes also runs on his side as well as heart problems. My main objective is to get healthy for myself as well as my wife. I don't expect to solve this overnight and am looking forward to taking this step-by-step. I believe slow ans steady win the race. I've been on diets before and at one point made it down to 200 lbs. I balloned back up after that though due to going back to bad habbits. I've started a new diet two weeks ago today. I found this forum and though I'd give it a go. Looking forward to exercise advice since I've never been really active. Looking forward to making friends and reading about your success. Thanks all!

Hi Barimusic! Welcome to the forum and well done for taking control of your eating habits.

I would say, in terms of exercise that whatever you are doing now, up it a notch. If you're not doing anything, start with walking and going for long walks. Walking is a very good starting point for when you're just starting out. After that you can read up (In the exercise section) about other things such as weight lifting which is also very good for you while dieting. It helps to keep your muscles I've heard? Not 100% sure on that.

But good luck anyway, you can and will do it.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, weight training seems a bit overwhelming to me as I'm about as "green" to it as you can get. It seems like every time I went to the gym to give it a go I'd feel so intimidated that I ended up not doing much. Coupled with the fact that it seems everyone else is already fit there didn't help much. I suppose there were people there willing to help had I asked, but I was to intimidated and ashamed to ask. Now, if I could go back I feel it would be different because I'm way more focused and determined to let my pride and shame get in my way.

I've been in and out of College and have had to work full time to support myself. Living the typical, "brush worrying about food aside" mentality that so many college students go through I adopted a very unhealthy life style. Fast Food became not only my staple meal, but also a comfort from the stresses of school, family, and work. This over the years had wrecked my body and self esteem.

Due to my failing health I haven't been able to work. I ended up in the ER one night a few months back with my blood pressure at 170 / 120. I went to see my doctor about that and the pains I've been feeling on my sides. He prescribed some pills for me to take to try to lower my blood pressure. He also said that I had a lot of fat around my liver and it was causing me to have internal problems. The bills from the medical visits coupled with living expenses is now gone so I'm trying to figure out how to get strong without the use of a gym, or at least until I can get back on my feet financially.

I decided that the time for me to take control was now. I felt like pills would only mask the fact that I was unhealthy and that I needed to do something, so two weeks ago I decided to break the cycle. I stopped drinking soda and fruit juice and instead only drank water. I let go of fast food and started eating healthy proteins such as chicken and fish. I cut down on my salt so much I hardly use it. I gave up white bread and now make my own whole grain. I upped my veggie intake altogether by eating more green veggies such as spinach, as well as yellow veggies (squash). Lastly I've started to go on hour long walks with my wife at night. She's adopted this new lifestyle as well and is very supportive.

So here's to let go of hurt (physical and emotional) caused by the lack of care for my body, and here's to the future new healthy me!
