Hey everyone, my name is Jay, I am 19 and from AZ. I am not sure if I should be posting asking for advice on my first post or even in this specific forum but Ill at least say why I'm here and maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

I'm living with my uncle right, and I don't know how much he weighs but Id say 250+ (I'd say closer to 300). He is 46 and in pretty bad shape as of right now. I'm trying to get him to lose weight but I don't think he has the internal motivation (and I am aware that without that, weight loss on any big scale is basically not going to happen). He is trying to do better because I keep asking but constantly reverts back to his old ways.

Currently he is using two canes because he hurt his knee. He is thinking of surgery to repair it, and he has already had surgery on the other knee. He does very little walking because his knees are so bad and its so hard for him. He is on the atkins diet, and doesnt follow it really well (which is probably a good thing as that diet worries me), and I dont see him counting calories like some other diets do. I'm trying to get him away from fast food and sodas to start, and I'm buying lean meat. He doesn't eat vegetables or fruit so basically all he is eating is meat, and recently salads.

I even bought a little 10 pound dumbbell to just promote exercising and get resting metabolism rate up while sitting around and I don't think he's used it once.

While he's not going to go through great lengths to lose weight, I'm willing to go great lengths to help him along because I am concerned about his health and I care a lot about him.

I'm open to all suggestions on new ways to motivate him, and modifications to any of the above notes.

Hi! I am not really sure how you could get your uncle to eat better unless he wants to. Who does the cooking? If you do, then you might try cooking healthier dishes. Let him try them without knowing it's good for him. Swimming would be a good exercise for him to try if a pool is available. The local weight loss clinic suggests swimming because it puts less stress on the knees than other exercises. Good luck.

heya welcome to the forums.

I would advise you to read as many of the 'Sticky' threads at the top of each forum. They are the best of the best advice and howtos explaining the how/where/why etc.
