Arrow Quit smoking gained weight

Hi everyone! I am a 52 year old woman who has always been thin. Only time I gained weight was when I was pregnant. I quit smoking a year ago and have gained 30 pounds and I am not happy about it, and either is my husband. I also was taking an antidepressant that caused weight gain. Im on a new one now that is not suppose to cause weight gain. So here I am and I will be here until I lose this weight.

Good for you for quiting. Doesn't it suck that it frequently leads to weight gain though? Ugh, you just can't win!

What are you plans/goals?

When i quit smoking I was terrified that I would gain weight so that is why I started this change. I have lost almost 40lbs since I quit.

It is a simple metabolism slow down involved.
Simple exercise will combat this and help you lose weight.

Congrats on quitting and welcome to the forum.

How much did you gain? Were you on any kind of diet watching anything like sugars, fats, carbs, portions? Or just exercise? what kind of excercise? I cant go for walks outside that is out of the question where I live.

i didnt gain anything. i began watching what i ate and exercising.
I was watching calories only- doesnt matter where they come from it is the number that counts.
exercise is whatever you want to do to get yourself moving.
doesnt have to be walking outside. You could dance in your living room if it gets your heart rate up.

Congrats on being able to quit! Despite gaining weight you are gonna be a lot better off now that you don't smoke. With some excersize and good dieting that weight should fall off.

Congrats on the success of quitting smoking; I'm right there with you. I haven't had a CIGARETTE since 07/28/08, but I have been sneaking a few puffs on a black & mild cigar when the urge is overwhelming. My biggest fear, by far, is weight gain. I'm already 10 lbs over what I want to be & having trouble fitting into clothes now......I don't DARE gain weight now. It's summertime, you think it'd be easy to keep weight off with summertime activities, right. WRONG!!!! So, we're in this together, now...............

Hi and welcome to the forum! I am new here also, and in a similar situation to you. I am 48 years old and I had gained 50 pounds in the last few years while going through menopause. I also had smoked 1 1/2 to 2 packs of cigarettes a day for the last 35 years. Suddenly in March of this year I got the urge to quit smoking. Added another 15 or so pounds! So here I am. My husband and I both have decided that it is time that we change to a healthier lifestyle. So we are eating differently and we joined a gym. I am still not smoking and I have lost 24 pounds. We both feel so much better. I am looking at it as a lifestyle rehab rather than a diet. I do want to be down to my goal weight by my 50th birthday however. I would love to turn 50 healthier than I have been for 30 years, and that is my ultimate goal.

welcome and congrats on quitting smoking !
The benefits of not smoking are far more than the fact that you gained pounds.
