Well I'm a new member here but from what I've seen if its support you need then you've come to the right place Everyone is different so its really about picking an eating plan thats right for you and that you can stick with. There's tons of info here and I'm sure somebody will post after me with better, more detailed advice on that.

All I can say is just make sure when you cut back you don't go too extreme... that can be as bad as over eating in the long run. Somebody posted a link somewhere earlier for a calculator to figure out where you can cut your calories to and lose weight so I'll have to go back and look. I am on a low carb diet instead which might appeal to you, I count carbs instead. But whatever you choose make sure it fits YOU or it won't last long. You may have to test out a few things to figure that out.

And on the exercise its all about starting out slow and building up, picking stuff you know you'll stick to at first. I was always one of those gung ho do it all at once people who'd burn out in a week or hit a plateau and have nowhere to go. Work out a plan and take it a day at a time. I used to beat myself up alot but I realize now I've learned alot from all my past diet mistakes

Glad you're here and welcome You can do this and we're all here for ya!

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day - teach a man to fish and he eats for the rest of his life and gives him something to do on weekends as well while drinking beer

Spend some time with the stickied t hreads - especially in nutrition (to help figure out a reasonable calorie range for yourself- it's not always what you think) Exercise, to get some background on fitness and what will work, and On Topic, for a whole lot of other info... There's a ton of info that's avaiable to you.

get an account at FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal and learn about portion size... and keep track of everything that you put in your mouth..

I just took a look at Fitday. It seems pretty interesting. I opened an account, too.

I gained 3 lbs since I joined yesterday. *sigh*. I did 30 min on a treadmill, but there was a picnic, and I ended up eating all day until night. I also have a big exam coming up, so I didn't sleep properly.

Does anyone find sleep connected to weight loss? So many people say that if they don't sleep they lose weight. I'm one of the few who actually gain weight from it.

Also I read this website once saying that exam performance goes down with dieting. Does anyone have any advice regarding how to diet and take an exam at the same time?

I've never heard of anyone losing weight from not sleeping that was overweight. Me personally I eat more when I'm tired and I'm too tired to be active...a no win situation.

And as for diets and exams, if you're on a healthy diet plan and not a crash diet it shouldn't be a problem. I'm in college to and since changing what I eat I've actually had clearer thinking and done better on tests...I feel better all the way around. Anyone can feel crappy through an initial diet change but after that but if you're on a diet that makes you not be able to focus and you feel crappy all the time, well in the end it's going to do more harm than good and will not help lose weight permanently.

Spend some time searching the forum -there's been a few documented scientific studies that say lack of sleep over time can contribute to weight gain...

however 3lbs in one night isn't likely caused by lackof sleep -and I'd be willing to bet it's not 3lbs of fat.. just the scale haas changed.

Homework time: find the thread entitled THE SCALE MENTALITY and read it twice...

Dont get so hung up on the n umber on the scale instead really focus on building new healthy habits.. and being consistent in your behavior
