Greetings and a question

Hello, I'm Brian and I'm glad I found this forum. Just a quick intro:

For most of my adult life, I struggled with my weight and got as high as 286. I am 36 years old; 5 foot 10 inches.

Four years ago, with the help of an old-fashioned doctor I lost more than 100 lbs. She told me to just limit my caloric intake to 2000 calories per day, without paying any attention to fat grams, carbs, etc. She also ran some tests on me and found there was nothing wrong with my metabolism.

This worked great for the first 3 years or so. I lost the weight and kept it off. Throughout this time I was never that active, and I had a once a week "cheat day", where I could eat the dinner and dessert of my choice. I wouldn't eat until I was sick, but I got pretty full. I still do this today.

About a year and a half ago, my weight started creeping up very slowly, to where I now weigh 200. I also don't get as hungry as I used to, suggesting I'm taking in too many calories.

I will do whatever is necessary to nip this in the bud. I'm guessing the weight gain is due to entering my mid-thirties, since no part of my routine changed. I am probably going to see the doctor again, but I wanted to see if anyone here had any insights.

Thanks for your time.

Your metabolism is slowing down on ya' buddy! Part of aging and all. I'd suggest starting a light exercise plan if you're not accustomed to very much of it, and work your way up. Maybe try the "Couch to 5 Km" plan I hear so much about? Also, if you build lean muscle at the gym with weights, this will also increase your metabolic rate. But I'm sure the veterans around here can tell you more about that than me

Hey, Bart. Good idea nipping it in the bud. You really don't want to get back where you started. I think that you'd be surprised at just how adaptable the human body is. Keeping your fitness level the same and your food level, it's not surprising that weight is creeping up. Read around the forum a bit, especially the stickies. There is some good information on here. I'm sure that you'll see a lot of the same information that your doctor told you, but there might be some stuff that she hasn't.

Also, check out the diaries of some members. There are some good people on here who have gone through a lot to get where they are. Some real good tricks to get things going again.
