I have a lot of weight to lose, right now i am 260lbs and i want to get down to about 150lbs. Should I figure out how many calories is takes to maintain this weight and cut 500 calories a day, or should i try to stick to about 1200-1500 calories a day?

but I'd probably suggest around 2200 or so for you to start with - it's a managable number that you can maintain long term.
How much are you exercising?
You did't gain the weight overnight, you aren't going to lose it overnight, a slow process is your best bet where you're losing about 1 percent of your body weight a week...
