Five meals a day? For serious?

For me, that's a lot. I don't have a large appetite and I don't want to eat past 6pm...

On days I have school, it's easier. Once before school, once in the middle, once after, once after or during work, once right when I get home, and once at six.

But on days I don't have school...? Well, I'm the kind of person who sleeps in. So... I'll sleep till about noon. Then I'll wake up and only have six hours to eat five meals/snacks?

What I've been advised to do is eat only three times a day on the days I wake up at noon. Will that be fine? I'm not highly active (sure, I do hit the gym most days of the week, but I have a wimpy-to-most exercise routine).

The reason people suggest 5-6 meals per day is because it keeps your metabolism up and thus you burn more calories.

Those meals should be a lot smaller than you are used to 300-600 calories each depending on your current maintenance level.

I agree it is tough in the beginning because your body isnt used to it. But if you choose highly catabolic foods such as carrots, celery, brocolli and many fruits you will find it far easier. These types of foods actually burn more calories to consume than they give, and that means guaranteed weight loss!

Well, shit, if you're gonna cry about it, just eat 2 or 3.

Little things like that don't matter as much as fundamentals like calories in < calories out, the quality and consistency of your exercise and the quality of your nutrition. So if you don't have the rest down, I wouldn't worry about it at all. And even if you do, you still probably don't need to worry about it.

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Celery and Negative Calories

there have been lengthy discussions about the negative calorie diet around these parts and while it's true that eating celery does have a negative calorie effect.. the guaranteed weight loss isn't a guarantee...

Although at one time I did the 5 meal a day thing and lost weight, I also lose weight on the 3 meal a day thing. Everyone is different, you really have to find out what works for you.

I dunno Dan, all I eat are carrots, broccolli and such and my weight doesn't fly off any faster.

Everybody is different, you are right. People can use the supermarket method - take what they want, leave what they don't want. I offered my opinion and that has what's worked for me.

If someone is finding that one thing isn't working then its time to move onto something else.

Losing weight is about having a complete plan of action. Nutrition, exercise and maintaining a positive frame of mind. Do this and in my belief weight loss is GUARANTEED.

Dan, you actually seem like a guy with good intentions.

That said, the reason your advice was jumped on is simple. Net calories matter more than anything else. More frequent feedings doesn't do much in terms of metabolic rate. Sure, you have the things like insulin regulation, satiety, etc, etc.

But your claim was incorrect with regards to the increased metabolism.

The reason most take issue with this is for the simple fact that many people may not be able to or may not want to fit that many feedings in per day. And keeping in mind the fact that they sure as hell don't have to in order to lose weight and obtain the body they're looking for, when a 'guru' comes in slinging that kind advice it gets stomped on.

It would be one thing if you were just an ordinary member giving advice on what's worked for you. I would not have commented.

But you came in here slinging your website, putting yourself in a position of authority. When you do that, you need to expect questioning and doubt.

And the reason this sort of thing bothers me so much when it's coming from a 'guru' is, it can really screw people's success up. Here's a guru claiming it's best to eat 5-6 meals per day always, and that might not match the individual looking for help and cause more harm than good.

In a nutshell, blanket advice from an ordinary member is fine. Blanket advice from a guru is not.

I'm not sure why I felt the need to explain..... but there ya have it.
