Rep Power: 16 | | Here is an interesting article on what you're talking about, meu, by Tom Venuto Protein Supplements Vs. Protein Foods - Bodybuilding
Quoting the most important part of the article: Quote: |
The biggest advantage of protein supplements is not that they can build more muscle than chicken or egg whites or any other whole food protein, the biggest advantage is convenience.

Well, in almost all cases it doesn't. Building muscle requires a caloric surplus unless you are an absolute novice to exercise. Read the thread, everything has been answered. |

Rep Power: 14 | | when you say losing weight, do you actually mean losing fat or do you want to see the number on the scale drop?
Whey protein can help preserve muscle, especially if you need an easy source of protein but as Steve and all say, if your going by numbers on the scale, it isn't for you. |

Rep Power: 17 | | its already been said... but to re-affirm. The biggest benefit is convenience. its very simple and quick to make on the fly. It plays a big role in my dieting, because its so easy. The low carb and fat content makes getting my macro nutrient ratios easy.
And also it cant be stressed enough. If your calorie balances are not in check then its not going to do you any good just by adding whey protein. |

Rep Power: 0 | | | For anyone that takes/has taken protein powders- advice needed! Just wanted to see if there was anyone out there that has tried/takes protein powders for some advice..
I went to my local vitamin shoppe to try to get something protein related so i could lose 10 lbs, tone muscle and keep my hunger at bay. The guy that worked there recommended this stuff called 100% whey. It has 110 cals, 1g fat, 24g protein. I have been taking it for a couple of days now, as my mid afternoon snack.
However now i am starting to get worried (after reading the tons of reviews by mostly men on amazon on how great the product is to build muscle).. is it okay for women to take protein powders? I am not a bodybuilder although i do run 40 minutes daily and do light freeweights.
the last thing i want to do however, is gain weight!
any advice is appreciated!! |

Rep Power: 217 | | Protein powders do not magically build muscle -you still have to do the work...
Protein powders are generally not low calories so that's why they help with muscle building as it puts the person into calorie surplus.. if you aren't working your muscles to use that surplus - and you're over your calories you will logically gain weight.
What are you expecting to get from these protein powders? |

Rep Power: 182 | | Your goal is to lose weight.
Losing weight requires an energetic (calorie) deficit.
Hyptrophy (muscle growth) is a very intensive process, energetically speaking. Because losing weight requires said deficit, you don't have the energetic capacity in place to facilitate muscle growth. Hell, your body will have a hard enough time maintaining what it's got, let alone adding more of it.
You aren't going to be putting on any significant amounts of muscle, no matter how much protein you drink. dieting+female=little to no hypertrophy
Even if you did have the energetic capacity (caloric surplus) in place, proper weight training, and adequate essential nutrients.... you still wouldn't pack on the muscle as women, in general, are not hormonally dispositioned to do so. |

Rep Power: 0 | | | When is the best time to drink a protein shake? Hi. I've been steadily gaining weight over the last few years and am getting back into weight lifting . Can anyone share with me their philosophy on eating before and after lifting? Is it okay to drink a shake before weight training? |

There are so many options to choose from so its best to get professional advise, but i am using SHITTY SPAMMY Whey Protein for pure muscle gain but unless you work out 4-5 times a week i would go for something like 50% wpi/wpc and something that taste good. The real effective stuff normally tase like crap.
here is a list of alot of products you can go though and pick what best suits you they all have descriptions of ingredients/uses.

Protein doesn't build muscle in the face of a hypocaloric diet. |

Rep Power: 6 | | | WHey Protein Why Whey? Well, whey protein is a very complete protein. It's Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) is 1, the highest available. It shares this with egg whites, another great source. The PDCAAS is used to evaluate protein sources by how well they can be digested and how well they match the body's amino acid requirements. The Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) used to be used for this purpose, but the PDCAAS gives a more complete picture of how well your body can use the protein.
Hope this helps,
