Snacks????

WHat are some good in between meal snacks. I am a fruit person but I have learned that too much fruit can give me too much sugar.

I need a good snack for after dinner (dinner is between 6-7pm)

You are right, I eat plenty of veggies as it is. many are low in carbs even if you eat a lot. Thanks. I like regular carrots. Rinse them and take off that first skin layer and they are great. that is a great late snack for me. thanks

Motts and a few other companies make single serve apple sauce containers, the strawberry and blueberry are fabulous.. gives you that touch of sweetness without any added sugar.. and only 50 calories...

Yogurt is always good.

Oatmeal as a late night snack

high fiber cereal is good any time of day.

Pretzels or my personal favorite, whole grain goldfish crackers, portioned out.

babybel cheese rounds or other cheeses - portioned out...

I love goat cheese spread on high fiber crackers like ry krisps or wasa crackers.

I love the 100 calorie bags of popcorn. 100 calorie chocolate pudding , and not sure how good they are for you but those darn smart ones desserts oh I love the brownie ala mode , mississippi mud pie and the cookie dough icecream- they range from like 160-200 calories but I wouldn't survive without them.

I usually eat cheese as a snack before bed. It is high in calories, but just a little is very filling. A recent study also says that different types of cheese cause different types of dreams:

"The British Cheese Board asked volunteers to eat domestic cheese a half an hour before sleep each night, for a week. The next morning they recorded dreams they had. Few recalled scary encounters. Furthermore, the board reported that Lancashire cheese seemed to prompt apparitions about work, Red Leicester cheese led to nostalgic visions of childhood, and cheddar caused dreams about celebrities.” FoodChannel: Cheese Dreams

I'm trying to eat six small meals a day instead of three large ones, so I'm having enough trouble remembering to eat when I'm supposed to so snacking hasn't been a problem.

My all time favorite snack is yogurt with a bit of granola, I usualy pair that with fruit in mornings for breakfast. If you get the larger tubs of vanilla yogurt, you can change the flavor to whatever you feel like that day, try using frozen fruit, or instant coffe crystals make a good coffee flavored yogurt.

Plus because you're dishing out your own, you can have as little as you want to fit within your daily calories.

Get an air popper for popcorn (so you can pop it with NO oil), and either eat it plain (I like it), or use one of the billion recipes online that uses fantastic seasonings instead of butter. There are all kinds of interesting no or low fat ones that taste fantastic - and popcorn fills you up more than a lot of other things.

1/2 cup Fat free cottage cheese - good source of protein.

Corn on the cob. I loooove it plain and fresh cooked, or you could use one of those fat free fake butter spray things.

Nonfat yogurt - I really like Dannon's Light and Fit Creamy style - I think it's 90 calories and 8 grams protein.

Another thing, especially if you are focusing on a low fat diet - since your body does need fats, restriction is only good in the sense that you now get to choose your fats so to speak - if you are cutting out most of the bad or unneeded fats, if you are going low enough, you'll want to replace them with good fats. I often measure out 15-20 raw almonds, or something similar, to munch on during the day. I'm always surprised at how satisfying they are, and measuring them out before hand keeps me from just going through the bag! Nuts = fats, but so much better for you than french fry fat!!!

Low cal snacks

What are your favorites? Got any good recipes or ideas?

I am a snacker, but I've been really good about only eating small portions of healthy food. But I also like variety in my food, and one can only eat so many 1/2 cups of carrots or 1/2 cups of cottage cheese before getting bored.

I don't snack ever really. Calories are what matter at the end of the day, but for me, I would rather space balanced meals out evenly throughout the day so I never have the urge to snack. Just my opinion of course.
