should i use whey protien?

well let me ask this. besides eating my tuna and chicken and vegies. do i need anything else? im starting to hit the weights hard and want to build up some muscle. im still pretty fat and im still focusing on loseing weight/fat while i lift.

at 320 pounds im confident i will be able to get well into the 200s befor i start slowing down on the scale while i lift. im still going to do my cardio as well. riding my bike had done alot for me so far so im not giving that up and walking my dog "aka trainer" as well.

my callorie intake will be raised around 2k to start and im going to keep it there for a few weeks and see how it goes. its my understanding that i need alot of protien for muscle growth, i dont know if i will be getting enough with my tuna and chicken. ive been reading alot about nutrition and im so lost. sure i know a lil more than i did a few months ago but WOW theres so much info. this whey protien stuff for example, do i need it? is it something that someone like me who trying to lose weight should take or is it more for the pretty people thats already thin and just trying to gain muscle?

i have so many questions on how i need to be eating im going crazy. really i want maximum results now with my diet and not make mistakes thats going to hurt everything i have already done. its not that im in a hurry. i just dont want to take any longer than it has to be and i know my diet is the main key.

Jynus has a spectacular aura aboutJynus has a spectacular aura about
whey = food. a nutritionally barren form of food. it's not needed in any way for either gaining muscle or losing fat anymoreso than real food. That being said, it's a VERY easy way to eat food post workout, thats why I eat it

also, you cant gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. so while it's great that you're upping your calories, you won't be seeing any real muscle gains until you up them well into the 3000's and beyond calorie range. The exception being noob gains. Anyone new to weight training has about a 2-3 month grace period where they can indeed gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. If they are really fat too, this will also apply. But you WILL reach a point where you plateau and will not gain further until calories are upped past maintenance. Meaning along with your muscle gain, you will experience fat gain.

I know this isn't what you asked about ... but it really leapt out at my from your post. You said:

What is it now? If you currently weigh 320 lbs then you MUST eat more. Ideally you should be eating around 3300-3500 calories a day in order to lose weight at a healthy and safe rate.

If you drop your calories too low, you'll lower your metabolism so far that you'll stall out. And if you're going to the gym and lifting weights you NEED those calories and that nutrition or you'll make yourself sick.

Now, as Jynus said, except for those who are completely new to weight lifting, you most likely won't be able to build much muscle while you're eating reduced calories. But you will be able to help maintain muscle which is important.

All of that said, I do use whey protein powder as a quick post-workout snack because it's a fast and easy way to get a good shot of protein in w/out a whole bunch of calories.
