When cooking for myself and my son I find that we are eating a lot of pasta dishes. This is a part of our main diet. What else could I substitute for pasta.

HI there,

you can try wholewheat or multigrain pasta. They are actually not bad for you. I made some yesterday (wholewheat) and it tasted yummy

Try making combinations with your pasta. Decrease the amount of pasta and increase the amount of topings (ie. chicken) or side dishes (ie. vegies).

I think one of the suggestions is to cook them 'al dente' which means that they have still some 'bite' to them. I just heard a report on the news the other day, where they mentioned that if you cook them 'al dente', that they turn into a slow carbohydrate - not sure if my terminology is correct - and therefore don't raise your bloodsugar level too fast and no insulin overproduction will occur.

Is there a way to overcook whole wheat or multigrain pasta. I was under the assumption that they stay 'al dente' if you cook them according to the instructions. Well, I guess if you cook them much longer you'd manage to get them soft as well, but who likes the pasta like that.......

A lot of people like their pasta overcooked. Have you ever ordered Pasta in a restaurant - me only once

You have to follow the instructions and get used to the 'bite' otherwise it won't work and the pasta will be 'bad' for you.

Brown rice is a good substitute. Or as others have said increase your side dishes.

When I cook pasta dishes for my family they are always served with a massive salad. I never have any of the pasta, just the topping/meat etc. over a massive salad.
