Rep Power: 7612 | | apparently i need to lose a few pounds my family doctor just called this evening with my blood test results. the good news is my cholesterol is down from october's high of 201 to 168 which i'm thrilled about. the LDL (bad cholesterol) is 107 which is lower than last time but it should be under 100. the HDL (good cholesterol) is 41 which is higher than last time and that is good because anything under 40 puts you at risk for heart disease.
now my blood sugar is what concerns me. it was 101 again even after fasting for 12 hrs which he says is borderline diabetic. thing is, it has been this way several times over the past couple years and every time he says we will keep an eye on it. so i said what should i do to get it down? he said more exercise, watch my diet and to lose a few pounds! so there ya have it, straight from the doc's mouth!

Rep Power: 26 | | I honestly don't mean to be offensive, but I just really don't know what to say. I cannot believe that your doctor said you needed to lose a few pounds. According to every BMI calculator that I have seen, at 5'5" and 115 pounds, it says you may be too skinny and should weigh a little more. I have talked with my doctor and a nutritionist, and at 5'4" they said a weight of 125 would be great. I don't know. I just don't know what to say.

Rep Power: 16 | | | Ive had gestational diabetes and my father suffers from diabetes now. You cant find a more fit man in his 60s out there, however...what he is doing wrong is the white sugar and cornsyrup foods out there. His feet swell up all the time and he takes medicine. He has to carry around a quick snack with him at all times in case his insulin gets too low from the meds. But his weight is good for a man his age and he walks EVERYWHERE!(five miles a day)
It is genetic I believe, so I am going to have to keep that in mind as well. Ive also been told that while losing weight and exercise helps with my high blood pressure, that I may easily still have HBP regardless.
Stinks, dont it?

Rep Power: 19 | | | Wow, loose a few pounds? at 115? That does not sound right. People who are overweight tend to have diebetes problems, so I think loosing weight is kind of generic recommendation. Did he even know how much you weigh when you had this conversation? Maybe he still thinks you're your old weight, LOL. I would seek a second opinion with your lab results. Maybe your body needs time to adjust to your new weight and will start regulating blood sugar better. Heredity is a big factor here.
Hope things will improve! |

Rep Power: 16 | | | call me a ding dong..when his blood sugar gets too low. I think that is what I meant? You know, getting the sweats, dizzy and all. if he drinks juice or a bite of candy hes better.

Rep Power: 0 | | | Hey, Lisa. I'm gonna have to say Oh My God!!! Sometimes it doesn't matter how much you lose there are other factors involved. My older daughter is 5'1" weighs only 95 pounds and still has high blood sugar levels. It's hereditary. You do need to start looking specifically at the sugars in your food. Even my daughter who is overweight with elevated blood sugar was told by the doctor to focus on actual sugar grams. I'm not telling you not to trust your doctor, but I would definitely go somewhere for a second opinion.

Rep Power: 0 | | | i'd be checking out the low GI diet - its very focussed on insulin levels etc, and is supposed to help with HBP. also helps to prevent and/or control diabetes (i'm on it because i want to prevent it)
hope it goes well..
