Hi, first I want to say welcome and congratulations! I congratulate you because you have taken a big step. You have faced the issues and now you can start making changes to improve your life. First thing you have to do is be prepared to hear lots of advice. Try to take it in the spirit it's given. Sometimes it seems like all you hear is people telling you everything you've done wrong. Well, you have to be able to recognize where you HAVE gone wrong in order to change it and not make the same mistakes again. My husband is right now about 425 pounds. He has weighed over 400 off and on since he was in the 8th grade! The first thing that I would do in your situation is spend about a week writing everything. Don't change your lifestyle during that week. Eat your normal meals, keep your same activities, but write it all down. No matter how bad you may think it looks, be completely honest. After a week, you will have a complete breakdown of your starting point. From there you will have the information you need to create a plan to make the changes in your lifestyle that will truly change your life. Also, be realistic. Graduation is only like 4(?) months away. In that time you can reasonably expect to lose up to 40 pounds. There is no quick secret. It's going to take time, but I promise you it's worth it! Any plan that promises you more results than that are either bull, or extremely unhealthy and dangerous. We will help you as much as possible. The more we know, the more we can help. We know that you are an 18 year old male, but that's just the beginning. How tall are you. What interests do you have? Let us know how we can help. Check out the diaries here. You will probably find things that are familiar to you and that can help you with ideas too. Good luck and don't give up!

Hello My name is Sunshine I am 26 years old!

Good for you for wanting to change your life!! Set your mind to it and it will happen! For me I was 323 pds and was tried of thinking about my weight day in and day out so I decided to change my life and what a great decision I have made!! For me I had never exercised before so it was all new at everything!! I decided to switch to low fat foods which there are lots out there! I have never counted calories or anything else just fat content! So I used fat free mayo, butter, salad dressing and baked all my meats and etc... At first I would ride on a staionary bike for about 4 miles through out the day then I got a treadmill and walked on it!! Then I started doing Richard Simmons for 1 hour a day and then walk for 30 minutes at night!! The weight just fell off of me!! In less then 10 months I have lost 84 pds!!! If you want to talk my YIM is cowboysgirl101! Good Luck!! You can and will do it!

Hey, I am a 30 year old guy, I was big in HS too. Not a great experience for me either. Anyway, you are on the right track by talking to people about it. Try starting a diet diary here in the forum. Be honest on it. If you have a real Sh##y day, write it down. Get back on the horse and keep going. We all have bad days, you will too. Just don’t give up. You have not wasted your life by getting big, you still have a lot of life left, and even more if you take control now.
I think what would help you out the most would be a low carb diet with relatively low calories, most coming from proteins. Stay away from all breads, potatoes, and rice products. You need to keep your insulin levels low because you are probably insulin resistant. Insulin mostly responds to grain products. Fat cells need insulin to take in food. You don’t want that. If you look at how bariatric surgery patients eat, that is how you should model your diet (but not as extreme) eat frequently, but less food, and mostly protein foods.
Don’t forget exercise. You don’t have to go nuts, just change some things around in your lifestyle. Walk to school, or to the store. Just get out more! I think that is one of the most important things you could do. Joining a gym helps if you are motivated, but joining alone will just thin out your wallet if you don’t use what you paid for.
I have a medical background, though you should follow your physicians advice, I can push you in the right direction. Ask your doctor to check your thyroid hormones to see if that is causing your weight problem. Feel free to ask me anything, Im here for you man. Congrats on taking control, don’t give up.
