Writing A Song For Someone: Corny Or Romantic?...

I've seen this movie about a million times, but I'm watching The Wedding Singer right now and it's the part near the end where Robbie (Adam Sandler) sings a song he wrote to Julia (Drew Barrymore) which makes her fall in love with him. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, Adam Sandler plays an aspiring song writer who is working as a wedding singer until he can make a career out of his music. During that time, he ends up falling in love with Drew Barrymore's character, who is getting married herself and has hired Adam Sandler to sing at her wedding. The two are having a conversation about love and finding "the one" and Drew Barrymore's character mentions that she just wants somebody that she can grow old with. So, Adam Sandler ends up writing her a song, which, for those who haven't seen the movie, can be heard/seen here...

The Wedding Singer - I Want To Grow Old With You

Anyway, that scene got me thinking...

Does that really work? Is writing a song for somebody still considered romantic or has it been done so much and worn so thin that it is now cheesy and douchey?

Personally, I think it's really, really romantic, but only if it's a meaningful song with heart and not some garbage like Hey There, Delilah or whatever that stupid song is called.

You?

First of all...I love that movie! It's one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies. That seen always makes me smile and get a little teary eyed...I'm a sucker for romantic comedies...lol. I think that it is very romantic. I don't think the song has to be serious either, it could be funny like the song in the movie...I think what makes it romantic is the time and thought and love put into it...I know I would love it if someone did that for me. I am kinda cheesy that way though..lol! Now I want to watch that movie again...lol!

To me, I think I'd always find it pretty romantic if someone were to write a song for me.

Ahhh that film is excellent!
Mostly romantic, however, if you, say, hid in her shower and emerged whilst she was on the toilet, guitar in hand...it probably isn't going to pull any heartstrings...unless of course the heartstring is attached to a panic button.

Ahem...yes

In conclusion, if done right...very very romantic. Someone write me a song please?

I don't like the movie (never seen it, but I hate the genre, Adam Sandler AND Drew Barrymore, so what are the odds? *lol*), but I think writing a song for somebody is nearly always romantic. It shows that you care enough for that person to sit down and think about a song and all of that....so, unless you are really, really untalented and mess it up, it's pretty romantic and meaningful.

I gotta say as a wedding photographer I've seen dozens of situations where one person has written a song for another. And while I adore my clients, most of the time it's pretty cringeworthy. I think the meaning for the two of them is probably very strong and probably very romantic, but when the song is performed for the rest of the world it comes across pretty corny and sometimes even embarrassing.

That said I've known 2 couples where one wrote a song for the other and it was so well done and so moving that I found myself tearing up even as I photographed it. So I know it CAN be done well ... just often it isn't.

And THAT said ... honestly I don't think it matters a whit what the rest of the world thinks. If you are moved to write a song, poetry, a novel ... whatever ... for the person you love, you should do it and f**k what the rest of the world thinks about it. I don't care if it's drivel or art or somewhere in between ... if it's done with feeling and heart and love then the person it's meant for will know it and that's the ONLY important thing.

(And yes, I'm a romantic - I don't care who knows it.)

i think it'd be romantic, IF the song was good, and the guy could sing. That's a few ifs though. The guy i like at the moment tho, could sing anything and i'd probably love it.

I think it's always romantic, even if the song sucks :P singing in front of people is difficult for most.
