No one even helped!!!

So I was at the beach with my kids, and this fellow asked to borrow our inner tube for floating, which was fine with me. When it was time to get it back, I went out into the water where I saw him lying on it on his back.

As I got closer, he didn't look right. He was splayed out on his back, with feet, arms, and his entire scalp submerged. One sandal had floated away. His eyes were partially open and looked somewhat rolled back. I called to him, with no reply. So I poked him, with no reply. Nothing. Then I started shaking him; yelling at him; and even slapping his face! THERE WAS NO REPLY. My daughter was starting to panic, and a small crowd of curious swimmers came round behind us.

I started pushing the man and tube towards shore, loudly asking for someone to go get this guy's friend, who was farther out in the lake but very visible. No one moved. I was shouting at people, asking how long the guy had been unconscious, and they just shrugged and said "a long time." As I continued to slap, shake, yell, and feel for a pulse, do you think anyone helped? NO. Not a single soul! So I push the tube and guy up onto the shore, looking for the closest person on land to call 9-1-1...and then the idiot on the tube starts to come around. I was so thankful and shocked that he was actually alive that I cussed (for which I later had to apologize to my little girl). I'm sure he must have passed out from drinking and/or drugs, though he didn't seem intoxicated initially.

That's the last time I let a stranger borrow my inner tube!

I have a friend in England who was recently eating at a restaurant
and a guy dining next to her table fell to the floor and starting having
a seizure. And NO ONE moved. She jumped up and went straight to him
and her mother called an ambulance and people around them just
kept eating.
It's amazing how little people care nowadays.
Are they too embarrassed to spring into action?
Are they unsure of how to help?
Are the willing to let a stranger die because they don't care?

Who knows. Point is that not enough people react the way
a decent human being should in an emergency situation!

Oh my goodness, how scary!!! You did the right thing. It could have turned out so differently. People have become very cold, I don't get it.

That is such a sad story about the lack of humanity in humans of today. Sad follow-up story from MakeMeHappy too.

It is not surprising that your daughter got scared and not surprising that you cussed. You are a good role model - and while you do not want her to learn to cuss - you would ok with her doing it on that kind of EXTREME provocation...

Far too many people poison their systems with drink and drugs without a thought to the possible consequences. For many of us - it was just part of growing up - scary when we later realise our stupidity. The sad thing is that it is what we think of when people pass out - when they might actually be ill and have not caused their situation by their own actions.

We had something similar here, I went to a nearby corner shop and there was somebody just lying on the ground in the car park, not moving. It was raining and all, yet several people just walked by. I went over and saw that it was an elderly woman (I would guess in her 70s). I checked her pulse and breathing (I'm a nurse, so fortunately I knew what to do), then called to some passing guy to call an ambulance.
He didn't, instead he went and summoned some of his buddies to come and just stand around and look. When I shouted at him again to call an ambulance, he said something like 'Oh, I know her, she's a boozer'. Apparently that is enough reason to let an old woman, who didn't smell of alcohol at all, by the way, lie unconscious in the rain and not give a damn.
The guys were in their late 20s, early 30s by the way. Eventually some kids came around, maybe 12/13, and one of the girls ran into the shop to get the owner to phone an ambulance, and two others helped me to get the woman as comfortable as possible, giving me their jackets and stuff to cover her.
The ambulance showed up and took her away, and I met a couple of weeks later in the shop. Apparently the shop owner had told her that the kids and me had helped her, because she gave me some chocolates (of all things) and asked me if I knew the kids because she wanted to thank them as well. They were neighbour's kids, so I took her and she had a chat to the kids and gave them some presents. Not sure what, I made a discreet exit. *lol*

Turned out the old lady wasn't a 'boozer' and she hadn't been drunk at all. She had tried to take a shortcut through the car park because it was raining, slipped and fell. According to her wristwatch, which broke when she fell, she had been lying there for nearly 20 minutes, in a somewhat busy car park, and nobody had even bothered to check on her. Makes me soooooo angry. I mean, even if you don't know what to do, or if you're scared that the person might be drunk or drugged, what stops people from just taking their cellphone (and 99% of people have one) and call the police? You don't even have to give them your name, for crying out loud. Or in this case, go into the shop and say 'Somebody's fallen outside, go and get help'. I don't get it.

HAHAHAHA, that's the moral of the story.

That's kind of ridiculous that nobody bothered helping. That's just one of the many, many, many reasons that I hate people - they're really lazy and selfish.

I think lots of people just don't have a clue what to do in an emergency, either. Or they are paralyzed by fear. Last year my daughter started choking on her roast beef. We were at a church dinner, of all things, surrounded by about 300 other people. The room was really noisy, so lots of folks just didn't notice - but everyone at our table did (including my husband/her father)! But everyone just sat there as she choked, clutched her throat, and jumped up from the table! I ran over to her and asked if she could breathe. When she shook her head, I did the Heimlich on her and out popped the offending piece. It was scary!

...and the moral of this story is, WE NEVER ATE ROAST BEEF AGAIN!!!
