Rep Power: 29 | | | Underrated Bands... I don't know why I've been thinking about this, but I was just wondering what bands that people here might consider to be underrated. I've just been collecting some music lately and I thought it would be interesting to see music that people listen to. And, to see the bands that they truly admire, but feel as if they don't get enough respect.
Who do I think is underrated? Well, a lot of bands, but here are a few... Robert Randolph & The Family Band - Robert Randolph is probably the most underrated guitar player that I've ever heard in my life. He plays a steel pedal guitar and, he's so insanely good at it, that Eric Clapton personally invited him out on tour with him. Just get one of their albums, because they're an amazing band. The Pharcyde - An early 90's hip-hop group that is only known for "Passing Me By" (the song in the video clip), even though they have a lot of other great songs. Eli 'Paperboy' Reed & The True Loves - Besides having one of the best band names ever, Reed actually plays some pretty awesome music. Now, it's not like any type of new music that you hear, but that's only because he understands what music is. Eli 'Paperboy' Reed and his band deliver some amazing sound straight from the good old days of Rock N Roll. Nightwish - The only way I can describe Nightwish is to say that their sound is a mixture of well organized operatic vocals, power chords and metal guitars that are backed by a huge orchestra, which make me wish that the volume of my speakers had no limits. Ozomatli - Yes, they sing in Spanish on a lot their songs, but they're an awesome band and you should pick up some of their albums. They're, what I would call, a "fun" band.

Rep Power: 2 | | Hullo! I love this thread, I am always on the prowl for new music
Thanks for some of your suggestions Running Girl, I wil have to have a listen to them. Depeche Mode are gorrgeous
O.k my suggestions :
La Roux are amazing they're an Electro band getting a bit of a name for themselves in Britain at the moment, they really are fantastic and awesome to dance to.
Maximo Park are another beautiful band, they're a British Indie band I guess although they are much more upbeat and original then your usual Indie band. Also they are Geordie they have lovely lovely voices yum. Very good to dance to again, I'd suggest listening to A Certain Trigger.
I'm also a Regina Spektor fan, although I think she's alot bigger in America then she is in Britain, and I do much prefer her earlier work haha |

Rep Power: 46 | | | I'm a big fan of the Phenomenauts right now.
How about The Sounds? Swedish, I think, and inspired by Blondie.
Kaiser Chiefs are good.
Johnny Marr and the Healers - amazingly good.
Nightwish - totally not for me, but a couple of good friends of mine are fanatical fans.
I'm mainly stuck in the late 70's/early 80's, so don't get into a lot of new music. |

Rep Power: 7 | | I like this thread. I seem to have a pretty good knack at recognizing bands that are new and underrated that will go on to become every day names.
I pretty much like rock, and most of the new stuff I like usually ends up going on to become pretty mainstream rock.
For example...
Theory of a deadman - I went to see them when they were the first opener for 3 doors down at duquesne U. in pittsburgh like 7 years ago before they were ever played on the radio. Now they have some pretty big hits.
Hinder - heard them in concert somewhere even before Get Stoned was being played regularly on Rock stations - they're pretty big now.
As for current bands that are underrated...
Black Stone Cherry - great band, no love (yet). When I saw them in concert opening for a more recent theory of a deadman and shinedown, they're weren't offering a CD for sale. I'd expect to see them become more mainstream in the next few years. They've got sort of a southern rock type of sound.
Red - good band, entirely underrated. TBH, none of the songs on their only CD are really radio-ready, but a couple radio-version re-recordings would fix that. I wouldn't call them spectacular, but its something I listen to regularly.
Cavo - if you haven't heard of them yet, (and you're into rock music), you will. These guys technically aren't underrated anymore... in fact, they're pretty overrated at the moment. They're kinda in one-hit wonder territory at the moment with the song "Champagne". But I swear, I heard these guys on some middle of no where radio station in the middle of PA and I knew they were gonna be big, and a week later I start hearing them on my home station in cleveland. Now that song is played 6 times a day on rock and top 40 formats. They need a good second single, or they'll fade away. I think their first CD is out now, but I DLed some of their earlier EP stuff and its all pretty solid IMO. These guys have potential.
And now, my underrated pick of the week: Like a Storm, a rock band out of New Zealand. These guys came all the way to the USofA and opened for creed at blossom music center near cleveland. They only played half a dozen songs, but the crowd reaction was pretty awesome for an opening band, considering that most people there had probably never heard of them before they walked out on stage at the show. I bout their $5 tour EP cd they offered at the show, and I'm excited to get a full release from them. I'm rootin' for these guys, they were pretty good. Quote: |
Nightwish - The only way I can describe Nightwish is to say that their sound is a mixture of well organized operatic vocals, power chords and metal guitars that are backed by a huge orchestra, which make me wish that the volume of my speakers had no limits.
| I've never heard of them, but this definately sounds like something I would be into. I kinda imagine from the description that they're kinda what you would get if you would combine TSO, Dragonforce, and Metallica's S&M album. |
