My grandad used to swear by Salad Cream with tuna. I'm going to get some in at some point, as it's lower in cals than mayo.
I never, ever eat tuna without sweetcorn! A good amount of sweetcorn also counts towards your 5-a-day *zing!* I get a sandwich filler which has chives in them, that's quite nice. I like to use ordinary pepper as well, that's always a simple extra touch.
Tornado Days, I had honey mustard with a tuna *ahem* Subway sandwich recently, and that was heavenly! If I can actually find some, I'm getting some in!
For the more competent cooks, what would you think about adding honey?
I was playing at lunch, and came up with a very tasty dressing that used honey...
(into my martini shaker -or any type or covered container)
1 tablespoons lime juice
1 tablespoons honey
1/2 tsp olive oil
3/4 tsp grated gingerroot (on substitutions websites, supposedly 1/4 tsp of the ground ginger from the spice aisle = 1 tsp of fresh so adjust appropriately, but the fresh is a bazillion times better)
1 clove of garlic, smashed (you can leave this in a chunk and remove it, I just wanted the flavor - smash it really good though)
Shake the bejeesus out of it.. I served it over a salad with baby spinach with chopped blueberries, strawberries, and kiwi... and a LOT of fresh ground pepper with a packet of tuna... and it was quite tasty...
the lime juice cut the sweetness of the honey and the dash of olive oil seemed to make it smoother... and the ginger just gave it a nice kick...
1/4 cup chopped up celery
1/4 cup chopped up english cucumber, with skin ( a pickle would be good here as well, but i'm trying to cut back on sodium)
1 tbs of low fat mayo
1 tbs dijon mustard
1 package of chunk white tuna fish
1 good shake of mrs dash seasoning
1 whole wheat wrap (the cedars low carb brand are 80 calories per wrap, with 6 grams of fiber)
1 handful of baby spinach
Mix tuna, celery, cuke, mayo, and mustard and seasoning.
Put spinach on wrap
put tuna on wrap (you really only need half the tuna.
Enjoy...
The low fat mayo has only 45 calories per tbs and the mustard adds enough flavor that it didn't taste bleh...
Curry Tuna
1 apple, unpeeled and diced (I used a fuji apple)
1 stalk celery, diced
3 oz albacore tuna, drained
2 tbs curry powder (40 calories, but adds 4 grams of fiber)
1 tbs of low fat mayo (i'm not sure this was really necessary)
Juice of one lime
Mix together, serve on a whole wheat pita bread... super yummy and makes a super huge portion for 350 calories - includng the pita
I forgot to mention...as much as I LOOOOOOOOOVE tuna all this talk in the news (local) is freaking me out about mercury levels and neurological damage. What do you guys thinking about this? Should I just chill out and enjoy my tuna or take something to flush out the toxins as I continue to include it in my diet?
this thread rocks! I was just sitting here with my tuna/orange pepper/green onion & mayo combo thinking 'wow, I can't eat this much longer unless I make it interesting
My mom used to make some sort of tuna/chick pea/vinegar salad which as unappealing as it sounds, was actually realllly good.

i saw something the other day,. and i don't remember where i saw it - but it was something to the effect that you should limit your tuna to 3 -4 days a week...
and avoid swordfish if you can... swordfish apparantly is very high in mercury... which is too bad i love it grilled.

Thanks Mal. I was addicted to Tuna at one point and was eating it almost EVERY day. I haven't had any in a while...you may see it pop back up into my lunch menus soon.
