potassium and sodium "destroying" your bones!!!!???? Even if there was a truth to that, soda drinks have very low contents of both.

I think he means the phosphorus (from the phosphoric acid in cola.) However, again, they don't really have a true study to prove this. I guess it could happen if you are just drinking soda and nothing else (as in milk or other calcium fortified products.) But who really knows until they do true studies.

Basically, that theory of soda leeching calcium from your bones is based on nutritional fact. However, just like John Henry and Paul Bunyan, it has been severely inflated.

In your small intestine you have similar receptor sites that are responsible for calcium and phosphorus uptake. These two macrominerals exist in an antagonistic state. In other words, if you have too much of one it inhibits the uptake of the other. Most animals require a 2:1 ratio of Ca:P. It takes a tremendous amount of either over a prolonged period of time to cause problems.

That said, diet soda contains trace amounts of phosphorus in the form of phosphoric acid. (That picture more than likely contains and extremely high molar concentration of the acid before it becomes immensely diluted.) You get more phosporus from a single chicken nugget than entire case of cola. Hell, water has trace amounts of phosphorus in it.

Don't get me wrong. If you want to quit drinking it then that is an amazing accomplishment and I applaud your will power. However, scaring people into a course of action (avoiding soda) is hardly ethical if evidence can show the contrary.

I am not as knowledgeable about aspartame, but I would be interested in seeing a medical journal article showing the stated adverse brain effects.

Diet Sodas and Aspartame

I agree that it is very confusing out there on all of this information. I too am not an expert or doctor but I can tell you that large amounts of diet soda, or regular soda, a day over a long period of time does take a toll on you. After I kicked my 10 year addiction I have been reading all over the net about people in the same shoes as I was. Anywhere from 7-12 cans a day for many years. The thing that shocked me the most was the symptoms that they all talk about where the same as I was having, headaces, migraines, jitterness, fatigue, joint pain and so forth. I didn't plan on becoming addicted, it just happened over time and the longer it went the more I drank. I tried over and over but the symptoms of withdrawal were really strong for me and maybe I was wimp, but it is a very tough thing to break for some people. I don't believe everything I read on the internet but I do believe my body and what it tells me and I do believe my doctor, for the most part. I broke my habit by accident in 5 days and never had a withdrawal symptom yet and feel like a new man. It is night and day how I feel. I don't mind sharing my story, if it can help others break the habit as well, Diet Drink Addiction
Thanks,
Mike

Were you drinking caffeine free soda? Pretty much all the symptoms you described could be attributed to high caffeine consumption withdrawl.

Quote:
People who stop consuming caffeine may have symptoms, but the incidence and severity of caffeine withdrawal are not known. This study was performed to determine the effects in the general population of ending one's dietary intake of caffeine. METHODS. We studied 62 normal adults whose intake of caffeine was low to moderate (mean amount, 235 mg--the equivalent of 2.5 cups of coffee--per day). They completed questionnaires about symptoms and tests of their mood and performance when consuming their normal diets (base-line period) and at the end of each of two two-day periods during which they consumed caffeine-free diets and under double-blind conditions received capsules containing placebo (placebo period) or caffeine (caffeine period) in amounts equal to their daily caffeine consumption. RESULTS. More subjects had abnormally high Beck Depression Inventory scores (11 percent), high scores on the trait scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (8 percent), low vigor scores (11 percent) and high fatigue scores (8 percent) on the Profile of Mood States, and moderate or severe headache (52 percent) during the placebo period than during either the base-line period (2, 0, 0, 0, and 2 percent, respectively; P less than 0.05) or the caffeine period (3, 2, 2, 0, and 6 percent; P less than 0.05). More subjects reported unauthorized use of medications during the placebo period (13 percent) than during the caffeine period (2 percent, P = 0.017). Performance of a tapping task was slower during the placebo period than during the base-line and caffeine periods (P less than 0.01). CONCLUSIONS. Persons who consume low or moderate amounts of caffeine may have a withdrawal syndrome after their daily consumption of caffeine ceases.

Coke is a pain for the body, I stopped drinking it two years ago, and I feel great, although the teeth whitening treatment was not cheap

I think this might be considered since you are promoting an item and I bet you are getting benefits from this promotion (Just betting since it's linked through your site.)

I agree with the poster above, if you were drinking that much coke, it was probably a caffeine addiction you had more than the soda addiction.

By no means is soda a health drink but it's just not healthy to consume anything in that quanity, unless it's pure water, but then again you could even drink to much water as well (water toxicity.)

One thing that can heal you from many previously considered irreversible damages, such as built up plaque in the arteries (clogged arteries), is pure pomegranate juice. Because of the plaque removal properties, it has even been said to cure certain types of erectile dysfunction. There have been reports that people who drank an 8oz / 250ml glass of pure pomegranate juice per day have entirely unclogged badly clogged arteries in one year's time.

It's expensive, difficult to find, and the pure stuff tastes pretty bad as well. So it must be good for you... It is a very powerful antioxidant, orders of magnitude more powerful than red wine.

If it were possible to buy or order it where I live, I'd be drinking a glass of the nasty stuff every day to clean my arteries and keep them clean.

Yeah cause the POM site that's all about SELLING THE PRODUCT is a "peer reviewed medical journal". Wanna give me the link to the actual medical journal that proves the nonsense you wrote?
