I LOVE my porridge (US=oatmeal). I look forward to getting up to it. It would be easy for me to only have porridge every day - I have become a porridge addict! Seriously though - its a great breakfast, as wholegrain as cereals can come - great for the heart, great breakfast for fitness, great especially for colder mornings.

I add things to mine - either whey protein, honey, or almonds.

For variety, every three or four days, I'll have high fibre bran with a chopped banana instead. Every few weeks, I'll have a couple of hard boiled eggs on wholemeal toast. Problem is - what I really always want is ... porridge!

I just like eating way too much to skip breakfast. I try to vary it a little, but most of the time I like a hot cerial like barley (the hulless kind is better than the pearled), or quinoa. Barley is about the lowest glycemic of grains and full of soluble and insoluble fiber. Best of all, it really satisfies. A little barley, chopped apple, garnish of walnuts and cinnamon and maybe a spoonful of yogurt and you are set until lunch! We sweeten with a little stevia. Also good with a spoonful of cocoa.

For convenience we often take a cup of barley and pour it into a Stanley thermos and top it off with boiling water. Seal and leave it overnight and breakfast is ready in the morning!

For variety I sometimes have an egg white omelette with plenty of onions and peppers cooked in a pan lubricated with a quick spray of olive oil. Good with taco sauce.

John
