I've discovered one truly superb side-benefit to losing weight.
Today is Day 3 after my femur surgery. Yesterday I graduated to hobbling about on a cane (compared to crutches), so I'd reckon healing is coming along quite nicely.
The physical therapy after surgery, however, was quite a challenge. I had 2 benign bone tumors removed from my right femur, and so of course my right leg is extremely stiff and sore. The first time I got on crutches with the physical therapist, wow, I realized... this would have been soooo much more difficult if I hadn't lost the 40 pounds I did this year!
Not only that, however. Over the past 6 months, I've been doing karate and martial arts, and my signature phrase, I can DO this, came in quite handy - I must have told myself that 24 times while getting up the courage to take that first step. Wow. Scary indeed, but I was able to succeed.
Thus, losing weight can really help you should you have surgery in the future!
Enjoy,
Barbara
One side benefit to losing weight Post #2 (permalink)
Thanks for the kind words. Today is Day 4 after my surgery, and I can now walk without a cane. Quite frankly, I'm pretty astonished at how rapidly I appear to be healing (but I'm certainly NOT going to push it!!!). Is it because of my better health? The 40 pounds of non-existent fat that my legs no longer have to support? My "I can DO this!" attitude? Who knows?
