Rep Power: 87 | | tell me if this makes scence..... I have a preggy friend who weighs about 300 pds. Her OB just put her on a 1200 cal diet!! So, she lost 3 pds this week, so the OB raised her cal count to 1500....but still, for being 300 pds AND being preggy...I don't think this dct. is very smart at all...whats your thoughts???? |

It disturbs me when I see pregnant women who claim to be eating for two and use the pregancy and an excuse to eat everything in site.... They might be eating for two but one of those two isn't exactly a linebacker for the New Jersey Giants...
I dont think a person should actively try to lose weight while they are pregnant... but if she's getting enough nutrition in those 1500 calories... Then I'm not sure there's a problem..
However, I'd hope the doctor was paying attention to the woman and how her body is respoding,, I'd imagine losing some weight will make for a healthier pregnancy and eliminate some complications that can develop.. I'd have hoped that she would ahve lost the weight before getting pregnant...
but -eh - she can always go to a different doctor...
Is she doing any sort of exercise at all? if she was 300lbs -i'd imagine movement wasnt a high priority for her. and overdoing could be dangerous for the fetus... but is the doctor at least having her walking? |

Rep Power: 25 | | Hi! I am somewhat surprised that your friend was actually able to conceive at such a heavy weight, as being extremely heavy and having PCOS seem to often go hand-in-hand. I hope she uses this opportunity to actually learn WISE eating habits, so that it will be more than baby fat she loses once the little one arrives.
I can't comment on what her doc does as I just don't know enough about it. I would sure be concerned if I had a patient that size who was pregnant, though. So many more things can go wrong!

Rep Power: 87 | | I'll be back to post more later...but for now, my thinking is this...if I were to come on WLF and tell you i'm doing 1200 cals, lets face it, i'd probably get scolded, but this woman is bigger and preggy..it just doesn't make SENSE to me |

Rep Power: 12 | | As long as she's getting all the good stuff, she'll be aight. That's what fat stores are for. As Mal says/implies/whatever, a lot of people use it as an excuse. I'm not advocating recklessness per se, but the human body is a very adaptive machine. Just my thoughts. I can see how you would be disturbed, though. |

Rep Power: 87 | | | yea, i see your point, but i don't think she is eating all that healthy....anyways, she told me she just requested and was granted a refferal to a high risk dct (she's had problems carrying the pregnancy through in the past) |

Rep Power: 217 | | her weight would make it a high risk pregancy - it's a shame she was foolish enough to get pregnant now rather than waiting til after she dropped some weight - not only for her own health but for that of the fetus...
I'm sure there are sensible methods a doctor can suggest to take the weight off but still get enough nutrition... |

Rep Power: 20 | | | I'm one of those heavy women with p.c.o.s like Abbagirl mentioned and in the past wasn't able to get pregnant even when I was 80lbs lighter, although at the time I didn't know why. My husband and I really want kids so that's also a big motivator for me but I really want to take off alot of weight first so I can enjoy the pregnancy and not be scared. It would still be encouraging though to hear a success story about a woman my size so pls keep us posted about your friend. I will pray everything goes ok for her and the baby. That's awesome that she already lost 100lbs. |

Yes, being at a lower weight would be the ideal, but life is not always the ideal. You cannot look down on someone because they are not in the ideal situation. I don't mean to attack...perhaps it was just an oversight in wording. |

Rep Power: 20 | | That's a tough balancing act. I personally would be hesitant to lose weight during pregnancy, because it frees up any fat-soluble toxins you've stored as you've gained weight - including mercury. OTOH, there are a lot of risks associated with being very overweight during pregnancy, and while I'm not convinced that losing weight during pregnancy would mitigate those risks, I'd have no problem believing that it would result in fewer treatment complications if one of the risks became reality. |
