Protein Supplements - Differences?

Ok so yesterday I was talking with my trainer about how I feel like I need to get more protein into my diet in the morning because by 10-11am I am hungry and craving carbs like a mad woman.

She suggested that I could start using a soy protein supplement for breakfast.

My question is....what are the different protein supplements? what different benefits do they have?

I was just curious as to why she said soy verses the other ones. Yes I could ask her and I will....but until then I wanted to get more info on it.

I'd be interested in hearing why she recommends soy as well.

Ask to explain the difference between whey and casein too.

Yeah I'm not sure why she suggested the soy vs. the other ones. I didn't think to ask actually but I'll make sure to ask her on saturday.

Until then does anyone wanna give me their .2cents on the different kinds?

I personally can't stand the taste of protein shakes... most of them have a chalky taste that just doesn't ever leave your mouth..

Why not just try to up your protein? Eggs (hard boiled are a good to go item), cottage cheese, chicken breasts (no one says breakfast has to be breakfast foods) even the kashi cereals are fairly high in protein.. and fiber which helps keep you full

Here is an interesting conversation about protein. About half way down is the question: John Berardi - The Protein Roundtable

Most of that is over my head. I use Whey. The benefits to me are that I have a little trouble getting as much protein as I would like through diet. I also feel I have seen improvements since I stated taking a protein shake post workout.

Chalky taste...good to know!

I can't eat eggs, I have cut out cheese for the time being, and if I eat anymore chicken than I already am I think I'll start to grow wings. The cereals that are high in fiber are great (sometimes I'll eat fiber one, or oatmeal) BUT I'm trying to lower my carb consumption.

I guess having gone over all that with her that's why she suggested a protein supplement.....I'm just trying to weigh my options and find out which one would be best for me.

If she's using it herself - you might ask her for a sample size of the one that she uses... the protein powder stuff I've bough - I've never seen in small sizes so you're kinda stuck wtih huge amounts - and if you don't like it -well it sucks..

So if there's one that she particularly likes -she might give you a serving of it -some o fthe mix with milk - others with water or juice -

I user protein supplements if I'm tired for a few days in a row. I can tell when my body needs it. As a vegetarian trying to be on a semi-low fat diet, I've cut out a lot of my protein sources (mostly because I hate the taste of non-fat and some low-fat dairy). I've tried them all back in my days of crew and lifting weights. I hated nearly all of them. To make them taste good, I would make milk shakes with ice cream and bananas. This was when I wasn't trying to lose weight. So now that I don't keep ice cream around the house, I've had to find other options.

Iso-rich Soy Greens is the one I use the most. It tastes absolutely hideous in water. But I discovered that mixing it in vanilla flavored almond milk is actually really good.

I don't think the whey I drink tastes bad at all. Like Nesquik. I never drank it w/water but with milk it is fine. Just have to get the clumps mixed out. I have used it in shakes, smoothies, with oatmeal. Its all good. Peanut butter, banana smoothie with chocolate whey. Its better than Dairy Queen.

I actually love the taste of my shake. I drink it in both milk and water. Certainly better in milk but not terrible in water.

For me it's either but I have the soy on hand and like it. I took a blood allergy test awhile ago and I have a "secondary reaction" to dairy (didn't specify what component - that was extra money!...and the doc was really a quack). That's when I got the soy stuff. And some Goatein. I've also used cow whey but I don't remember which brands and I haven't found one that I consistently like when mixed in water. Seems like about half way through the container, I start to hate it! The soy stuff is almost gone and I still love it. Of course, I never tried whey in almond milk, so maybe that's the key for me.

So for you, why whey over soy?

trueprotein.com, complete milk dairy isolate, premium banana bash flavor.

It's the only one I've ever tried that masks the chalky taste, it's by far the highest quality I've ever encountered, instantized, and environment-friendly.

It's also 80/20 casein/whey, which some people believe to be ideal.

I don't work for them, but as far as I'm concerned they deserve the free publicity.

P.S. Soy is poison.

I also happen to know several recipes for delicious, ridiculously healthy (the only kind I'll go near) smoothies you can make. My favorite is banana cream pie. It's amazing. Better than actual banana cream pie, at least in my 18-days-of-velocity-addled mind.
