Rep Power: 5 | | Summer weather.. what do you wear? Personally I feel hot all the time so when it gets warm outside I lose all rationality and have to fight the impulse to hose myself down!
Luckily England only gets 3-4 weeks of hot weather so I don't have to suffer too much!
At the moment I like to make sure my upper arms and from the knees up are covered so that means vest tops and shorts are out of the question for me.
Just wondering what other people do in the summer to cope with the heat?
Thank God the gym is air conditioned or I don't think I would go at all! |

Rep Power: 12 | | | I'm embarrassed about how I look in shorts and short sleeves so I wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts even in summer. Sometimes the heat is unbearable...I live in Texas, where it can get over 100F easily in summer. |

My legs and arms are hideos... but - for the gym, I will wear short -I like the nike gym shorts -that come down mid thigh -they cover all the parts that need hiding... and short sleeve shirts (arms look better - even jiggly arms) when in a shirt that ends just above the bicep... If my arms would ever tan up (I burn easily, and use sunscreen so not much chance of that happening) I would wear sleeveless shirts more oftenb ecuase how often do you flap your arms about? you don't - they are usually at your sides, so the jiggle isn't noticable. wicking fabric is essential... I sweat and a cotton tshirt will chafe...
For work, I will wear dress pants or skirts that fall just below the knee... for weekends I will wear bermuda shorts... |

How far do you think you need to go before feeling comfortable in short sleeves? I've got a way to go yet I think! |

Haha you are right about the arm flapping.. I have weird cellulite or something I guess on my upper arms that shows regardless of my arms being at my sides or not. So I tend to cover up completely.
Really not fun considering the rest of my family and 95% of my friends are super slim and flaunting it! I want this to be the last summer I fear baring my arms though. EVER. |

I used to live in England and I got used to the cooler summers there. I've only been back in Texas for 13 months and I haven't fully replaced my wardrobe. I still have a drawer full of bras and knickers from M&S and tops from Evans. And a few wool coats from BHS which I haven't worn since I left England.
Summers in England were terrific weather-wise unless the temperatures climbed above 90F. My house, as with most houses in the UK, didn't have air conditioning and neither did my car. My office's air conditioning was installed as an afterthought and it was very inefficient. We weren't allowed to have fans on our desks (Norwich Union were health & safety Nazis) so we just had to sweat it out. Even the buses in York had poor AC. On hot days my ex and I used to go to Sainsbury's just to cool down. The ready meal section there was always nice and cool. |

Found some absolutely great ones recently that tick all the boxes and are still fashionable and lightweight. |

Virtually everybody my age has absolutely no desire to stay in England and would never raise children here. The emigration rate is phenomenal. I'm definately thinking of moving abroad at some point.
Typical health and safety rules, you can't do ANYTHING these days without stepping on somebody's toes!
I love your Sainsbury's story that's really funny!! There is literally nowhere else to cool down though thinking about it! All English houses are designed to KEEP IN heat haha! The old carpet/curtain combo doesn't help much either! |

The emigration rate is phenomenal. I'm definately thinking of moving abroad at some point. | I just couldn't stand living over there; the cost of living was sky-high, salaries were pitiful and ambition didn't seem to count for anything. Plus, the cultural differences were too much for me and I got tired of the constant anti-American thread running through everything. I did get tired of being expected to explain everything about my country that English people didn't like. It wasn't all bad; it taught me a lot of patience. Plus, I have lots of cool "I lived abroad" stories. It's a good ice-breaker since most Americans have a positive opinion of the UK and are interested in hearing about my experiences there. Quote: |

| Oh geez, I know! The only people allowed to have fans at NU were pregnant women. Like they're the only ones who get hot. Quote: |

| My house faced west and the master bedroom would get SO hot. It was unbelievable. Nothing we did would keep the heat out. Heavy curtains, foil on the windows, fans running all day long...nothing. It was miserable when it got over 90F. Usually it wasn't too bad and I'd leave the back door open all day long to get a nice breeze. I do miss having a yard too...I had a really nice garden in England. |

Rep Power: 28 | | | I live in central Texas, so it is hot, hot, hot!!!! It is a normal thing for it to be above 100* in summer here!
For working out, I wear tank tops and shorts. I can't stand to feel sleeves on my arms when I am working out, and I also can't work out in pants. T shirts and pants are just too heavy, hot, and uncomfortable! Even in the winter (which isn't much of a winter!), I workout in shorts and tank tops. I'll wear pants or a sweater over them until it's time to sweat! |

There is definately a stereotype towards anyone and everyone here. I think I know a typical English stereotype for almost every country. It's a shame how narrow-minded a lot of people are here.
The cost of living is ridiculous right now, I can barely afford my gym membership on top of everything else. People are seriously struggling. It doesn't help either when the papers release statistics such as 'The average Brit would survive 11 days on their savings until claiming themselves bankrupt'
What a morale booster!!! Quote:

The rules some people have to abide by are so pointless. My cousin is training to be a nurse and she had a placement in a mental health hospital. She was allowed to wear her own clothes instead of a uniform and she had on a completely conservative summer dress. She got told off because her hem was too 'frilly' and might get caught in the door and she could injure herself.
Shocking! Quote: |

| Yep, that's what we get for building with bricks!!!!!
Today has been absolutely ridiculous I've not needed to leave the house so I had on a very thin strapless dress and was STILL boiling hot.
My fan is going at full speed and barely even moving the air. Sucks.
Although I seriously doubt it'll last more than a week haha!!! |

Do you find your weight affects your body temperature too?
I definately remember being cold more when I was slimmer!!!!!
Although I may just blame global warming haha! |

I have to work out in trousers cause I actually don't own any shorts!!!
I wear baggy t-shirts that fall just before my elbow, I can't stand sleeves past my elbows anyway, I always roll up long sleeves!!
What about winter weather? Does it get pretty cold in Texas or is it always fairly warm? | | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
