I love this idea!!! I actually talked about this with my fiance' last night. When I get to 180lbs I'm going to get my nails done and when I get to 160lbs I'm going to start tanning Somewhere in between there I'll need new panties....mine are getting a little big...hehe!!!
I'm at 182 now...when I get to 179, I'm going to celebrate w/ a new bottle of nail polish. I know its only 3 pds, but its a place I havn't been at in YEARS
This is an excellent idea. I had a friend who was doing this, and her rewards were new shoes or clothing for her goals! Her husband worked out a rewards system with her and she'd get to buy something for every like 5lbs she lst. This worked really well for her because she was a total shoe and clothes lover!! (like a lot of women. hehe)
So.. here are some of my rewards
First 5lbs, I bought a new pair of shoes and jeans, desperately needed!
I think a real key here is finding something that you would really enjoy having or appreciate doing for yourself. Perhaps something you haven't done in a really long time and then rewarding yourself with that. Also. posting pictures up of what your "starting weight" is at your house is another good motivator. This way you can have a reminder of just how far you have come and where your still getting to!
Some other reward ideas:
New work out clothes
New work out dvd
new work out accessories (i.e. I Just bought a new water bottle!! which I'm excited about..what a nerd!)
new pair of tennis shoes
flowers for yourself
Another note.. most of you probably know this, but to state the obvious, just do not reward yourself with food. As it is our whole goal to teach ourselves that food is not our gratification. Its fuel to keep our bodies going and that's about it. (At least its how I need to remind myself)
Secondly.. for motivation, practice some "positive self talk". Make a goal every day to say one positive thing about your progress, your success, and your goals. Whether it be work, your dieting, your exercise, whatever.. Mine for the day is: Even though I desperately do not want to exercise anymore this week, I got up this morning and still hit the gym. I will be exercising tonight. Yay for me!
NL, you have some good ideas. But, you know, when reading your post about food being only for substance and not a reward... This is maybe where we need to strive to achieve, but I think for me food will always be a reward. For example, if I have not had icecream in a month and I was so good and I lost 5 lbs, having a bit of icecream is exactly what I want, even more then a pair of jeans or new clothes. Or rewarding myself with an outing to a nice restaurant with wonderful food. I love to enjoy food purely for its taste! That's probably why I gained so much weight to begin with, but that is something I could never change about myself. I will always enjoy the taste of food, and especially rich foods, and I will enjoy how food makes me feel. I cannot imagine my life without that. However, the change I'm willing to make for a lifetime is the amount of those foods and frequency. To me it is really about learning when to stop and when to say no. I get so cought up in the moment of enjoying food, that I forget I'm supposed to stop. Learning appropriate portions really helps.
Sorry for ramblings, just wanted to share another point of view...
actually, when i reach the 170s i plan on buying a whole new exercise wardrobe! mine is rather worn in and faded, so i'm thinking it will be appropriate. when i reach the 160s i think i'll buy myself a whole new wardrobe!
