Heart rate monitor

Ok, I'm about to start trying some new things in my workout, such as running and some workout videos. I won't be able to accurately count calories burned or verify I'm getting a good enough workout without a heart rate monitor, I'm told.

I don't have a ton of money to blow on a good HRM....is there a decent mid-level option that will keep track of my heart rate and count calories burned?

I don't think you can ever accurately guess your calories burned through exercise anyways.

Why not try just counting your pulses

they really vary, ive seen them for a round a tenner on ebay and like £200+ in sports shops, i always try buy the cheap one first and then if you get into it pay a little more. the ebay one looks orite as well, has a little sensor you put your finger on and it takes your pulse.

I find that the base model polar works well for me. The ones which work by touching your finger to a sensor don't work very well.

Google or search this site on

Rate of Perceived Exertion...

Use that as your guideline to know if you're getting a good enough workout or not..

you do not need a heart rate monitor for that...

I mean...I know the signs, physically, that I'm getting a good workout. Like when I run, I'm out of breath, I'm sweating and my muscles FEEL like they've been used.

I'm just a visual person...I like being able to log onto Sparkpeople, input my workout and keep a count of the calories I'm burning. I just kind of FEEL like I'm doing something. I guess it's just a hangup I have...

sweating doesn't mean much of anything - just that you're sweating... don't use that as a judge...

If you want a hrm - get one... make it a reward for doing something...

Wiht some people - knowing how many calories you've burned in a day can be a hinderance - like I burned xxxx calories in a day -why didn't I losexxx - WAAAAH WAAAH and WAAAH (and I can easily point to 286 threads on Spark where people have that problem...

Go with how you feel - and how your clothes are fitting... Obsessing over numbers isn't good for you long term..
