Binge Eating...

I have to mind dump...I am down about 36 pounds since last December and am very proud of myself. I actually bought a size 10 jean and my booty is bootilicious in them. However I have started binge eating at night again. Like last night I ended up scarfing a leftover hamburger down and some wheat thins.

I am scared sh*tless and do not want to get back to bad habits. I want to lose another 20+ pounds and have been stuck for a long time.

One thing is I have abandoned my journal so today I went in and journaled. I am also not counting my weight watchers points at night. I am eating but not putting them down, therefore not accountable.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what have they done to get back on track???

I binge eat but it seems to be at all different times. I can be really good for a few weeks then just go crazy and my weight will bounce up a few pounds. Grrrr Always a struggle...

I don't binge eat at night, but when I get off track and I finally realize it (because sometimes I think I purposefully don't focus on my eating) I start counting calories again.

Even if I don't change my eating, I'm counting the calories and I'm seeing them add up in front of me and something inside of me will eventually say, "Okay, stop overeating. You can happily live on 1600 calories a day, let's go back to that. YOu don't need 2200 calories a day."

I binge around my period because it seems I never get full around that time of the month. I also noticed that if I didn't eat enough through the day I was more likely to binge at night. I changed my dinner time from 6 to 7pm and that seems to be working better for me. If I still get hungry I'll eat a small bowl of fiber one cereal and that helps. Also if I'm still in the munching mood, but I know I have eaten plenty I'll drink a BIG glass of ice water. A lot of times dehydration will mask itself as hunger. If you still have problems with binging at night I would go for a late stroll and then come home and brush and floss your teeth.

brushing and flossing my teeth always works for me at night when I just want to munch on something. Can't eat something if your mouth is minty fresh.. food won't taste right. Excellent tip Mylee!

Hey, Karebare--

When I've crammed unhealthy food, it tended to be at night. So I hear you.

I think you hit on one of the key things to do yourself--make sure to continue to track your eating, even on bad days. It's much harder to keep overeating and eating unhealthy food when we have to write down what we ate, and see the calories (or Weight Watchers points) adding up beyond where we want them.

A second thing that really helps with night eating is to plan your calories over the day, and make sure you eat enough at breakfast, lunch and dinner. With night eating, it's easy to start eating less during the day to make allowances. Problem is, that leaves us starving and therefore even more likely to binge when evening comes. Plan your daytime eating so your not starved when evening comes. Then allow for a healthy, moderate snack in the evening. I often do berries and yogurt, or some grapes and an ounce of cheese, as my evening snack.

I also really like the suggestion to floss and brush your teeth. It creates a mindset that you're done eating for the day.

Good luck!

Jim

hey!! thanks everyone, i havent been in here for awhile...

I do like the brush teeth/floss idea.

I just need to make myself get back on track with the journal and exercise 5 days a week. I am spinning 3 but have slacked the other days. Today I got to the gym after school and I forgot my shorts :-)...so I couldnt do my workout. The treadmill is here next to me, maybe i will hop on and watch the biggest loser on the web....

You are right rupert, its all about accountability!

I feel ya. I had my first bad night in awhile last night. And I'm sure it was because I'd hardly eaten all day, so I was starving and overate. My dad likes to eat more for breakfast and lunch, and then a small dinner so he won't pig out at night, but I find that doesn't work as well for me.

I try to save about half of my calories for dinner because I know that night time is the hardest time for me. So if I'm eating 1600 calories I'll eat filling healthy breakfasts and lunches like Oatmeal and rice and tuna and veggies. And still have 600 calories for dinner and a 200 calorie snack after dinner.

I agree with Rupert too, write down everything. Counting every calorie and weekly goals helped me. So if I only have 200 calories left, maybe I eat 500, knowing I'll have to make that up over the next two days. But I won't eat 1000 extra, because I know that'll make my weekly goals impossible.

I'm a big number and goal person, though. But I went about 2 months with very little binging since starting. And I was a the textbook binge eater before.
