Stepper vs treadmil

Hi everybody,

I have just started my weightloss journey, and have considered investing in a piece of workout equipment. I have a gym membership, but I always have excuses of not having too much time to use it.

So I was thinking of getting either a treadmil or a stepmachine (not the small version) - I live in a small apartment, so i only have room (and money) for one thing.

What would you guys suggest for weight loss? I seem to enjoy the stepper more than running. My main issue is to ruduce the size of my butt and thighs. I know that spotreducing is impossible - I just don't want to risk 'bulking up' by using the stepper.

So guys, what does your experience tell you? What should I invest in, that would help me to a proper weight loss? Any other equipment you've found better?

Thank you guys =]

I think it's a lot down to personal taste and preference. For me, the stepper is pure torture, and I can't do more than about 5 minutes on, while I can easily and happily walk for an hour on my treadmill.

I guess it also depends on your weight and things like that, the stepper is even heavier on the joints, especially the knees, than walking on the treadmill, so if you've got any problems with your knees and things, you might be better off with a treadmill. If not, as said, I think it mainly comes down to personal taste.

What San said.

Also you're not goig to "bulk up" your butt an thighs by using a stepper.

The one to buy is the one that you'll use more. As far as being best for "fat loss" - really it doesn't matter. Either one will burn calories and burning calories is what causes fat loss.

i think you should stick with your gym pass, get your butt up and go. make time for it, schedule your time i always do that (no offense) but i learn it from my own mistake. i had a gym pass also and i bought an elliptical which i never use.. maybe for the first 2 weeks i was on it every morning but now its just collecting dust and wasted my money on it... but im not saying that will happen to yours but it could, i got bored of it quick

now i go to the gym and do my cardio needs, i often find it more better because the gym has a variety of different equipment, not just one like the equipment i have at home..yeah...

I agree. Spend the money on a gym membership and actually go. I have a treadmill and found I got very bored with it quickly. Going to the gym gives me a mountain of things to do, without the boredom. Elliptical, treadmill, bike, stair stepper, not to mention the weight training and all the zumba classes, and yoga - you name it and my gym has it.

Sounds nice, but only works for people who can make the time for it. Personally, as much as I would like to, I can't take the time I would need to do a proper workout at the gym. I'm at a point where I have a little shelf mounted onto my treadmill, and my laptop on it, so I can do computer stuff while walking....*sigh*

I can understand about the time thing. It takes me 15 minutes to get to the gym (after dring 1 hour to get home from work); I spend at least 1 1/2 hours working out, and then another 15 minutes to get home. Most nights I don't get home until 8:00 p.m. But for me it works. I can't spend another winter sitting on the couch watching television. Maybe the treadmill would be a better choice for you - mine goes up to level 10; a very steep hill and believe me, you get a tremendous workout.

What about an elliptical? Would you have room for one of them? I find they are my favorite piece equipment at the gym and it burns 2x more calories then the treadmill and its easy on the knees(I have knee problems). I agree gym is the best way to go, my gym has pretty much everything and so much more and i find it fun to go with a buddy. Maybe try and find a work out buddy to help get you motivated to go to the gym? Either way i wish you the best of luck in your weight loss goal!
