Theres a few threads around here that deal with the same question. I've had no problem losing weight while snacking at night. As long as you haven't exceeded "your daily intake" there should be no problem.

As nvme said -it's total calories for the day that matter -not when you eat them... I've followed that philosophy for the past 19 months and won't argue with the results...

spend some time reading around the forum, you'll get lots of great informationand alot of myths busted as well

I regularly eat a snack late at night. I sleep better that way. your body is burning calories even when you sleep. Cottage cheese is a great snack before bed because it is low carb and has protein that releases slowly into your system. I opt for the 1% variety

That is actually great. I was told all the time that you shouldn't eat anything after 6pm, because then the body doesn't burn so much fat at night. But it is nice the hear that this is wrong. Seems like I needn't have a bad concience anymore when I feel like having a small snack in the evening :-)

I usually have a Trader Joe's Vegan Trail Mix cookie, it has about 130 calories but is full of nuts, a couple of grams of fiber, and is soooo amazingly tasty. I usually have a ton of calories to eat up at night, so I find I have the opposite problem of you .. but this still isn't too bad

Thumbs up

Morning,

If I'm going to eat at night, it's generally foods that help me fall asleep - a big salad, for example. I'll also do a quick review of my caloric/protein intake, and if I'm too low, grab some fruit/chicken/etc.

I've gotten to the point in my weight loss journey that if I eat empty calories, I feel an insane desire to exercise it off (or at least, delude myself that I'm exercising it off ). And since that's a no-go at night, I try to stick to healthy eating.

Enjoy,

Barbara

I have this problem, I'm a bit of a grazer, I eat bits and bobs regularly during the day, rather than eating lots at meals, I have to get used to having my meals and not eating after that except small snacks. I've been trying to have fruit at night now.

Late Night Snacking

I need some help and advice, you guys. During the day, I do a really good job sticking to my food plan. It isn't until after about eight o' clock, I become ravenously hungry. Usually, this means I'll break my code of promise and eat past eight. The problem lies in the fact that if I do snack, it isn't just an apple or an orange or one bowl of ice cream. If I eat a small bowl of ice cream, I find myself going back for seconds or even thirds. If that doesn't fill me up, I'll stand in the fridge and eat spoonfuls of peanut butter until I finally feel full.

My question to you guys is what I should do to reverse this. During the day, I eat every two hours, 5-6 meals. And I'm usually fine, until the evening when I'm ten times hungrier than the daytime. And I don't crave just anything, usually it's sweets or peanut butter, pretty much nothing else.

I don't feel guilty about however, because I do run afterwards. Usually I burn 500-600 calories a night. Because I eat enough in the day, I know I can do without the added 500+ calories I just scarffed down fifteen minutes prior to my evening excersize.

I just need help in trying to correct this bad habit of mine.

clearly your body seems to want food at that time of night, just save a few calories extra for the evening and leave it at that. Im a night time eater from way back, though recently ive been purplexed by the fact that im suddenly hungry in the mornings more than evenings. And if i dont eat in the mornings fairly decently i eat continuously in the evening. but if i eat in the morning i dont eat so much in the evening.
But yeah, for the majority of the 160lb+ lost i ate most of my calories after 5pm (about 500 first half of the day, 1000-1500 the last couple hours).
Calories in vs calories out, dont stress or worry about it so much as just be aware thats when your body wants it more
It might change over time like mine has naturally, or it might not!

I'm no diet expert by any means, but I used to have a similar problem with snacking when I was hungry and drinking soda/juices when I wasn't thirsty. I've come to learn that this is a 100% mental thing. My methods for quitting should probably only be used as a last resort if you just can't seem to cut the habit.

What worked for me was that I consciously let myself overload on this junk until it just wasn't enjoyable anymore, to the point where I thought to myself, "This just isn't that great". It worked on quitting soda pretty easily, I let myself drink so much Mountain Dew that it just didn't taste good anymore and it quickly got the point where just the thought of it disgusted me. Especially when I found out that soda makes pretty good toilet bowl cleaner

As for snacking, this was sort of a two step thing. When I go running I tend to think to myself stuff like, "I just burnt off a Little Debbie snack cake worth of calories" after running a mile, or "I just burnt off a slice of pizza" after running 2 miles. Then you get home and you look at those snacks and junk food totally differently, you start asking yourself, "Which is easier: I can run another mile and have this cookie, or I can just not eat the cookie"... and the answer is so obvious that it's hard to still give in to the temptation.

Basically I look at all food as miles... some are worth it... some aren't.

I think if you're hungry around this time then you should eat but just something different. I snack on blueberries most evenings which keeps me content and not raiding the cupboard for bread etc.

If you can't eat something healthy then perhaps it's just cravings which are harder to deal with in my experience.

Cottage cheese is another good one but i find it hard to eat that every night so lately blueberries are it.

my food plan calls for a snack of a fruit and a dairy, it seems to satisfy me.

anytime I eat anything sugary, I want more more more... i'm a darned sugar addict (ewwwwwwww did I admit that!?)

Wow, this sounds very convincing. My issue is, I have sports in the daytime, and running so much makes me terribly hungry. I suppose I could just eat lower calorie foods afterwards. I'll have to try this for a couple of days...
