Average calories burnt on an average day

This is something I've wondered... is how many calories does an average person burn on an average day (something like going to the office doing work all day, coming home then sleeping). Because a lot of people are suppose to consume so many calories in a day, but over time, the average person slowly gains weight which means he almost would burn what he eats right?

According to the site I use, I burn about 2200 a day. I'm 5'2", 159 lbs, female, 32. So as long as I eat less than 2200, I should be losing.

Too many generalities in your question to answer, IMO.

We each burn a different amount of calories each day based on a number of factors. Some of us eat more than others, some of us work very physically demanding jobs, some of us have more LBM than others, genetic make up comes into play, and more. It is an impossibility to answer it.

When working with someone, going with 15 calories per pound of bodyweight is a good estimate, but even this is generalality. If you have chronically undereaten for any length of time, chances are, your metabolism is slower than this.

Many of the best minds in the fitness industry stick with the 15 calories per lb calculation, and for good reason IMO.

Also, over time, we slowly gain weight b/c as we age, our metabolisms slow down as life goes on.

well no I know my question is general, but it's not like there are stats or charts that are published that show this?

There are plent of "published" equations and methods to determine average calories expended based on certain physical traits. In the end though, they are all estimations. So why not go with 15 cals per lb.

Join the club of chronic under-eaters who reside here on this forum.

So for you, your maintenance level is probably lower than 15 calories, depending on how long you have been eating like this. No big deal, unless you are having trouble losing weight. If that is the case, your body, which it will inevitably do to ANYONE who is under-eating, has taken the necessary physiological survival steps to hinder your weight loss. Once this occurs, the only way around it is to start eating more in a very systematic way.

I've been eating like this for years.. and I do a lot of cycling races and biathlons

mind you, I increase to about 3000 a day in the summer... but nowadays I run 4 times a week for an hour and intake about 1500 calories (just for winter)
