Cool Moabnuts diary

Hello all,
I’ve never been much of a poster on any forum, but I have always enjoyed reading them and learning new things from them. I started dieting recently and I have been keeping a journal of my own. I guess I could share it with all of you too.
Me and a few people in my family are having a biggest loser contest. Im going to beat the crap out of all of them. I would really like them to step up to the plate and walk the walk but I guess its just going to be me. None of them are doing anything.
I have had some pretty good success so far but I’m afraid of petering out. I have lost about 22 lbs but a lot of that was water weight. I was at 280 lbs just a month ago. I am now at 258. 2 years ago I was about 205 down from 230. I was working out and running a lot. Some life things happened and I just couldn’t get the motivation back and my weight soared well above what my body has always been comfortable with (230). I am a awful example of rebound weight gain. My goal is to get down to 180 or at least around 200 and somehow learn how to keep it there.
I am a medical student and I treat patients daily now. It is hard to look a patient in the eye and tell them they need to lose weight to control their diabetes or hypertension and expect them to listen to me when I obviously cant do it myself. I need to be a better example.
So I’m starting this journal because if I fail I wont just be failing me, I will be failing everybody (if anybody) that reads this too. So I look forward to a happier healthier 2006 that I can share with all you too!

Thanks for the encouragement Sugarfoot. Ive gotten a lot of motivation from reading other people diaries... Somehow that just dont sound right...
Well today Ive done pretty good. I hit below my allotted calorie consumption and I feel pretty good. Ive been kind of bummed because I haven’t been getting the losses that I got the first part of my diet. What Im doing for my diet is to eat a little bit all day. I do have a small breakfast and I allow a few more calories if I go to the gym. I eat a lot of beef jerky, granola bars, salads, yogurt, and balance bars. My absolute favorite thing to make is a stir fry with chicken breast and Caribbean jerk marinade sauce (just a little bit) I try to stay away from anything that has a lot of carbs. I try to just give my body enough carbs to satisfy my immediate energy needs without giving enough to go into storage. I made some pretty stiff goals when I started and I have less than 2 weeks to meet my goal of 250 lbs. Thats 7 lbs away...could be tough, but I think I can do it. The problem is I have a couple business dinners where the food is very expensive, plentiful and completely paid for by other people...its hard to stay on track in that situation.
I didnt go to the gym today because my leg still hurts from going overboard a couple days ago. Hopefully it will feel better tomorrow because Ive been really lazy the last couple days.

I know everyone says not to step on the scale everyday, but Ive always felt encouraged by the scale...while I am losing anyway. This whole diet Ive been losing about about 3/4 lbs/day. This last week Ive had slower progress. I spent 3 days at 258. I started feeling like maybe I shouldnt look at the scale, but I would have a hard time not looking. Im very scientific minded... I need to see results, good or bad. So anyway, weighed in at 256 today. I felt pretty good about that. finally, some needle movement. Ive been so lazy the last few days though, no activity at all. I did good calorie wise though.

Scale by the fridge hu? I think I might get some funny looks from the other two medical students I live with. I try not to bring too much attention to my diet. I just barricade myself in my room so Im not tempted to eat pizza and drink beer with them.
I have to confess, I failed miserably today. We had a pizza type party with all the med students at my hospital and I thought hrm, Ill go and just have a salad. I didnt want to be anti-social. Anyway, yes, I ate pizza, and cheese sticks and some cinnamon sticks and blah blah. I feel pretty bad about it. I thought I could do better. tomorrow, I catch a flight home to visit family. We always have parties and stuff when Im there. I typically gain some weight every time I go. Today was a bad time to break cause it lowers my motivation for the next time Im tempted. Wish me luck! Im going to try hard.
Anyway, redneckwoman, I love your idea for the biggest loser challenge, but I couldnt follow that diet. I like the diet and I could eat that, but I dont think I could do it at work. I typically put some granola bars or beef jerky (in 30 Cal chunks) in my white coat and every hour or so I eat one. I dont really have time for lunch and I definitely dont have the ability to carry veggies around with me all day. They are too big. They way I do it, I can work right through the lunch hour, always able to eat within 1 hour. It helps shrink my stomach and I never get insulin surges. It works pretty good for me and Ive seen good results so far.
I need to get to the gym more. I just get sooo tired after work I come home and crash. Then I do computer stuff, then its too late to go work out. Happens like that every day. Forget going in the morning, I barely make it to work as it is. Im not a morning person and I have to be there between 6-7AM. Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me....eh, Ill try to do better, what can I say? Later

I didnt do too good this weekend, My family had 2 birthday parties with plenty of food to eat. We did do a Salad at one followed by cheesecake. Nice combo hu? I figured twice as much salad was twice as healthy…right? Sunday we had pot roast with home made cookies for desert, I did good with the pot roast but made up for it with the cookies. I came home and hopped on the scale completely by accident and indecently noted I had gained a couple #s. In my defense I have done really good today and I am back on the bandwagon.

Well, I did pretty good today. I stuck to my diet even though I was tempted several times. I even went to the gym. I did the eliptical for 30 minutes and the tredmill for 20. I got my weight back down to 257, my weight before last weekend. Im really going to push to make my goal of 250 by Feb 1st. I got some new beef jerky that is really spicy. I cut them into about 30 Cal chunks. I keep them in my pocket and munch on them during the day. I also have cut up peices of granola bar.
I keep stumbling around 255. I cant seem to get below it. Its almost like the needle gets stuck, then I screw up and gain a couple lbs, then back down to 255 but never below. Very frustrating, but Im very determined to break that in the next couple days.

oh sweetie, I can so feel your struggle!

Just give your self small goals, and dont let yourself get overwhelmed. ten pound goals are SO much easier! I mean, always keep that final goal in the back of your mind, but keep the smaller one at the front of it. It may help some.

The way I did it was count about two pounds a week from the time I started, and made mini goals in ten pound increments. Ive already got one increment behind me! But the way I figure, June first is my final goal, and that day will come whether Im skinny or fat, so might as well shoot for skinny!

Keep coming here, keep honest with yourself, and youll get there! and KEEP READING! go find u some before and after pics, that always helps me!

I'm with Kate; it usually works best with mini goals. You get a feeling of accomplishment when you meet them, and I don't know about you but that gives me more motivation then anything. You did a great job at the gym, keep it up and we're here if you need us

I totaly agree with you guys on the small goals. My first goal was to be at 250 by Feb 1st. Im switching to atkins for the week to drop down to make my goal. my next goal was 235 by March 1st. My first goal was a bit on the high side, but I wanted to take into account that I always lose weight real fast at first, then drop off very slowly. Then 15 lbs the next month and I figured 10lbs/mo after that, that is unless I can keep up the fast weight loss. I did get the scale to dip down to 254 today, finally some progress. Im very impatient. I like to lose weight fast... I know its healthier to lose weight slower, but I have a lot to lose and I gained it pretty fast too. I was 200lbs just 1.5 years ago. I also do the before and after pics, I can tell some difference, but mainly in my clothes.
I didnt do too great today, but not bad either. I had a subway sub without chease and mayo, with lots of veggies. I figured I would have something good before I go Atkins. I only have 4 lbs to lose before I can ditch the Atkins diet. I dont have too many gripes against the Atkins diet, from a medical standpoint. Ive worked with several physicians that swear by it. I understand the physiology behind it and it makes sense, but I dont want all the sodium and nitrates... so I will only do it short term. I eat so few carbs that I should be in Ketosis within a day. should be fun!

This Atkins diet is working pretty good for me. Im surprised that I can lose consistently even after Ive been dieting for a month or so. I checked the scale and Im at 251 today. Maybe its because Ive stuck to my diet pretty good this last week. Also, I have been getting some exercise. I went to the gym today and worked out for 1 ½ hours, Partially because my roommates drove me there and I couldn’t leave till they were done. I did 45 min. on the elliptical, 15 min on the treadmill and a couple min on the stair master. Then I went and lifted weights for the first time in a couple years. Im sure Ill be sore for a week though. People are starting to notice the weight loss now which is encouraging. I only have 1 lb to go to reach my goal for Jan. (250 #’s) I have 14 hour shifts for the next month starting tomorrow, Im just hoping that doesn’t throw a monkey wrench in my running gear.
Right now Im eating beaf jerky, ham, eggs and chicken. Im still eating low fat/calorie meats too. Im not eating whatever I want. after I get to 250, I may alow a day or too of eating whatever protien foods I feel like, (double cheeseburger, no bun). but then I will go back to eating more of a south beach diet like I have been doing. I should be to 250 by the 1st of Feb with no probs.

Talking Goal #1 attained!

Well, I finally made my first goal of 250 by Feb 1st. With 1 day to spare too. My next goal is 235 by March 1st. Its a pretty rough goal, but I think I can do it. all the following months Im shooting for 10 lbs/month. I lost 24 lbs in Jan. I lose a lot of weight right off the bat when I start diets so I made my goals prettly lofty to take that into account.
Im going to continue atkins for a few days, then Ill go back to a south beach type diet. I was drug to the gym by my room mate today. I had decided not to go at all because Im VERY sore from lifting yesterday, but I went anyway and had a very good cardio day. The machines said I burned over 1000 Cal which is my highest yet. I dont put a whole lot of faith in those machine's calorie estamates because everybody is different, but thats a lot of calories whether its accurate or not. I did 45 min on a eliptical and 20 min on a treadmill.
