Special trips call for special eats, otherwise what's the point ?? I guess this boils down to where I read many on here use vacation as a motivator only to look good on the trip instead of taking their remaining life benefits into consideration. That thinking puzzles me somewhat, I mean the continuation should flow right on past the 'vaca'...

You just can't help being a poet can you!

Maybe some people are thinking about being able to wear a swimsuit on their trip, and enjoy light clothes and sunshine without worrying about revealing more fat than they are used to. Not me! I just went out this weekend and bought a jacket that adds on 100 inches!!

We'd just had a cold snap, when I went out on Friday night to a restaurant next to the ocean, and the wind was bitter. I asked one of my friends if it felt like New Zealand and she said "yes", and another said it reminded her of England, and then it reminded me of England! But not in a good way. And then I started wondering why on earth I was leaving a mild climate for a colder one!! Of course I do know. Snow. and mountains. and difference.

Anyway, I need to keep some balance I guess between gaining the "difference" and getting sluggish and uncomfortable.

Are you in Australia still? Here.. (in USA.. new england area..) It can get as cold as -5 Degrees Farenheit!! SCARY cold. During winter it actually stays close to 10 degrees farenhiet.

Oh Brandy, yes, that seems scary to me!!! I am still in Perth for another 10 days, but I will be in New Zealand on holidays soon. I really have no idea how cold the spots we get to will be. It will be spring there, as it is here, so I doubt it will be as cold as your weather gets - I sure hope not!! My idea of a bitter wind would probably just seem like a bit of a breeze to you!

Monday

Breakfast 7:00 1 slice wholemeal toast with plum and cinnamon jam. 1 boiled egg. 2 weetbix, 1/3 C diced peaches , 1C low fat soy milk. Coffee with 15 ml Hilo milk.

Lunch 12:30 6 Vive crackers. (About equal to 2 average slices of bread I think.) ~ 60 gm lowfat cottage cheese. Tomato, capsicum, zucchini, mushroom, black olives. Snow peas. Coffee with milk.

Snack 5:00 Ladyfinger banana and coffee with milk.

Dinner 8:00 80 gm tinned red salmon, ~ ½ c tinned butter beans, 1 tbspn mashed potato, grilled capsicum, zucchini, eggplant ( with a little EVO oil). ½ tub low fat yoghurt and chopped fresh pear. Coffee with milk.

I deliberately dropped back the carbs/protein/calories a bit more yesterday and today, though trying to stick with the same types of food, and still making sure that I'm not actually feeling hungry or uncomfortable. I'm not eating less than is recommended - just eating at the low end of the range I think is acceptable rather than at the high end as I was recently. I'll see how this goes. In some ways I think it might be good to keep the calories lowish for the next couple of weeks - maybe not every day though.

I found my thought for how to eat while I'm away, I think. It's the same one I use for restaurants. I'll try to eat in a way I won't regret. That is I don't want to regret missing something I really wanted, or that is somehow special. Also I don't want to regret eating too much and getting a stomach ache or feeling sluggish and gaining extra fat while not even especially enjoying what I'm eating.

Exercise: No. I feel ambivalent about exercising just now with the knee/ankle thing and today the idea that I shouldn't was on top.

I lost another half a kilo. No that's not just a line left here from yesterday's post. My weight has dropped again. Fun for me!

Today I wanted a number I could compare to my doctor's scales. I saw a specialist I don't often see but who has been weighing me on the same scales for some years, so I was able to get a comparison with the ideas I had of how much I weighed before to now. I don't quite know what difference it makes. Over the last 6 years the weight I had when I first met her was about 84 kg, which dropped at the lowest to 79, and at it's highest was about 93. I never was at my actual highest weights any time I saw her, because knowing I was going to see her was always a bit of an inspiration for me to eat better.

Anyway, she says I'm still healthy which is always nice to hear.

Also, it was most interesting to me to see that her scales weigh me at least 2 kilos (ie 4.4 lb) lighter than the shopping centre scales. I do remember noticing that when I thought I was 79 a few months back, I looked slimmer than when I touched that weight a few years back. Now in one way I get it that what I weigh in numbers is not really all that significant one way or the other, but then again ... they do often feel quite significant!! And I don't know about those shopping centre scales. They always show me around a kilo higher than my home scales. Also there used to be another set of scales at the shopping centre that showed me weighing 3 kilos less. But maybe the reason they took that set away is that they were buggered! Anyway I like the scales I use there because they show me how much I've lost in an accurate way. Yet if I think about my BMI, which I do now and again, then I wonder how much I really weigh, especially now, because if the doctor's scales are right, I am not obese any more. I thought that unlike my goal weight which is a rubbery number, my obese/overweight marker was something firm but it turns out not to be. I will stick with the scales I've been using and the figures I have in my signature, because I like seeing how far I've come, and because that's a simple way to do it. However, when it comes to thinking about goals, I guess maybe I have a little less to go than I expected before I might get the healthy weight tick. That's another nice thought.

Yeah on losing girlfriend, that's great news to hear today! I know what you mean about bulky jackets (coats) and how they always make us look heavier, but when it's cold we have no choice. HAHAHAHA Oh well, I'm ready for fall to start here, this was a real rainy summer and I didn't get to spend to much time out swimming, which stunk, but oh well. I'm happy to see your sticking with your food plan, you eat so good and so many different types of foods, it's awesome to read about it. But, what are Vive crackers?? Like wheat crackers?? are they large? Is your tin salmon, like the cans of tuna? is that what you mean when you put that on there? I have been meaning to ask you that. I hope your day is a good one!! Stay warm!
Kim

Oh yes. You guys say canned not tinned, right. It's the same thing. There are so many American shows on TV, that to me both words seem the same. Your words seem normal to me, and I don't always realize what expressions we use that you don't use.

The extra warm jackets do kind of make me look fatter, but I don't really care because I can't imagine being cold enough to be able to wear anything so warm, and still think about how I look at the same time!

I've only just started eating the Vive crackers. Actually the company that makes them calls them crispbread, but they seem very similar to a cracker to me. The ones I'm having just now are called Vive Lites Wholemeal Crispbread and are made by Paradise (who I haven't heard of before). Last summer I was eating Salada, which are like Saltine. However the Vive things are bigger to look at, but have less calories, less carbs, less fat and less sodium. I don't know how because they taste more creamy than the other ones to me. They have a bit less fibre though. In the winter I have mostly been having real bread and hard cheese, because I can toast it, but in the summer I like the crackers with cottage cheese. Also they're handy to keep in the glove box or my handbag for times when it's hard to get what I'd prefer to eat. In some ways I find them more useful for losing weight because they take longer to eat. Today that was maybe not such a good thing for me though because school lunchtimes are sometimes very rushed. Today I ate some veges, ½ cracker and 1 piece of beef jerky and it was time to go back to work. Fortunately I had a job as a physical education teacher though, so I just kept slowly eating for the rest of the day! I didn't plan to eat beef jerky. It's too slow, but I forgot where I'd put the cottage cheese and had to go onto the emergency rations! So that's yet another tub of cottage cheese I've left behind at yet another school.

Tuesday

Breakfast 7:00 1 slice wholemeal toast with plum and cinnamon jam. 1 boiled egg. 2 weetbix, 1/3 C diced peaches , 1C low fat soy milk. Coffee with 15 ml Hilo milk.
Snack: 10:30 1 apple. I coffee with milk.

Lunch 12:30 – 3:00 One delicious yellow capsicum, 2 small mushrooms and about 6 bean shoots (I accidentally tipped all the other bean shoots into the school sink). 6 Vive crackers. 25 gm beef jerky.

Snack 4:15 A small piece of leftover frittata. (Egg, smidge of lean bacon, lots of different veges including olives - too yummy)

Dinner 6:30 ~2/3 C spaghetti with a sauce of lean minced beef (~ 130 gm), onions, carrots and tomato. Diet apricot yoghurt. Banana. Coffee with milk.
Exercise: No. Not unless you count standing up for 5 ¾ hours minus 2x20 minutes, plus walking around for about 1/3 of that time, plus doing warm up and cool down stretches with 6 classes, I thought that was enough punishment for my legs today.

Far out! When I started typing this soon after school I was sleepy, as in I have been staying up too late too often. Also my knee was responding badly to all that standing, and I got the others in my family to rub my thigh as per the physio. However, I have previously done this repeatedly for both my husband and my son who complained bitterly about how I hurt them and looked highly entertaining for the rest of us as they rolled around objecting and trying to get away from me. Payback time!! I will not ask my husband to do this again!! He can press too hard! Then I fell asleep. Waking up after a nap is always a danger time for me as far as eating goes. Fortunately my husband had started cooking, so I just finished things off a little. No salad tonight. But ok. By now it's 9:15 and I am realizing that my body wasn't thrilled about me pretending to be a physed teacher today. That's even without actually doing any physed. I reckon this is the time for a very early night! (well 11:46 isn't very early is it - but this will have to do - an improvement at least!)

Thanks Brandy. The knee is a lot better than it was, and my whole body is a lot better than yesterday. I'm a bit exasperated that it is an issue right now, so close to this damn holiday which is probably turning me into a bit of an unreasonably nervous nelly about it all. I really ought to have been more careful earlier on. Like all winter. At any rate, I'm still seeing the physio, which is a nuisance, but a deliberate attempt to get things fixed as much and as fast as possible.

Wednesday

Breakfast 7:00 1 slice wholemeal toast with plum and cinnamon jam. 1 boiled egg. 2 weetbix, 1/3 C diced peaches , 1C low fat soy milk. Coffee with 15 ml Hilo milk.

Snack: 10:30 1 apple. Coffee with milk.

Lunch 12:20 1 wholemeal bread roll, with a little low fat hard cheese, 1 thin slice ham, mushrooms and capsicum, squashed rather flat in a toasting machine. The rest of the delicious yellow capsicum, and about 8 sugar snap peas. 1 coffee.

Dinner 7:45 100 gm lean grilled lamb. 80 gm microwaved potato. Microwaved carrots and broccoli. Grilled capsicum and mushroom. Oiled grilled eggplant. 1/3 C instant gravy. ½ tub low fat yoghurt and chopped fresh pear. Coffee with milk.

Exercise: 6:00 pm ~ 25 minute brisk walk in the bush at Warwick. Not an inviting evening weatherwise and at the end of a very busy afternoon, I really felt tired and hungry and just wanted to get home and get the cooking over with before I felt any more tired! Yet though it's counterintuitive ( to me), the before dinner walk is definitely helpful with all those things. It makes me less tired, and less hungry. Getting started each time is still the hardest part but I really wasn't feeling sore and so I went.

I finally remembered to look up the pickled berries I ate at the restaurant last weekend. It turns out they're called caper berries and are pretty much just the same thing as capers, but have been picked after they've grown bigger. I guess capers are not a taste that appeals to everyone but I actually really liked them. I will look for some to keep here, because they're something different to what we're used to seeing, and have next to no calories or oil - just a bit of sodium.

Kitchen Dictionary: caper

Thanks Cannon! So am I!

Thursday

Breakfast 7:00 1 slice wholemeal toast with plum and cinnamon jam. 1 boiled egg. 2 weetbix, 1/3 C diced peaches , 1C low fat soy milk. Coffee with 15 ml Hilo milk.

Snack: 10:30 1 apple. Coffee with milk.

Lunch 12:45 2 slices wholemeal toast (with cold fillings because I barely had time to eat at all!!) A little low fat hard cheese, 1 thin slice ham, mushrooms and black olives. Coffee with milk.

Year 7's today, and no work prepared and left for them. A bit more of a challenge than some days!

Snack 4:00 Slice wholemeal toast with plum and cinnamon jam. Navel orange. Coffee with milk.

Dinner
8:45 140 gm lightly fried crimson snapper with fresh lime juice. 2 slices fresh wholemeal Vienna loaf, with sesame seeds (a batard, but a large one.) Salad veges with a little French onion dip. Carrot, broccolli, capsicum, mushrooms, tomato, cucumber, sugar snap peas. Coffee with milk.

A big plateful of veges. I did originally (like last year or earlier) start on all the veges because I was told the fibre is good to even out sugar levels, plus of course they have all those goodies in them, but tonight they were good just for the sense that I had such a pretty colourful long lasting pile of food to eat! (Of course it tasted good too. ) I reckoned I needed to balance up the rush of the day. After all the busyness I was pretty tired by the time I was putting my meal together, and there was no one else eating, so there was a bit of a temptation to just dump some fish in bread and leave it at that. This was one of the times my own words to someone else came back to persuade me. I think that's definitely a bonus that comes from being part of this place. Because I had to remember that I sometimes talk about how quick it is to grab some veges and run them under the tap (faucet?), and just eat them! So I did that. They wouldn't fit in a bowl like that though, and I had to wait a few little minutes for the fish to cook, so I ended up making a very few swipes at them with knife, and adding a little dip, and really ended up feeling my meal was rather luxurious and privileged, yet again. Which of course, it just out and out was!! It's best for me to be aware of that and feel it though.

Exercise: No. Physically, I really could have. I'm starting to stress about the holiday deadlines again though – only one more weekend to go! So my only after school exercise was shopping.

I finally have my camera though!! No pics yet. I haven't even taken it out of the box yet.
