Rep Power: 22 | | | Wow, i feel it was very disrespectful, even if she was dead, it was like she wasn't worth the effort. Even if the truck was the only means to transport her, why would they feel it was ok to cover her with a dirty old carpet, why not a blanket. I feel sorry for the family. Unfortunately, the amount of people that are reaching that kind of weight, is getting higher and higher. |

Rep Power: 25 | | | I am sad for the child she left behind, virtually by her own hand. The fact that said child also witnessed her being taken away in such a callous manner just adds to the sadness of the situation.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Marion County Coroner's Office has come under fire after it was revealed that an obese woman was dragged from her home and hauled away on a trailer in front of family members following her death.
Teresa Smith, 48, who weighed 750 pounds, died Tuesday in her apartment on Indianapolis' northeast side.
| Ok, I'll be THAT guy...
What in the Hell did people expect them to do with a 750 lb person? They can't just have a few guys peacefully remove her body from her home; she's way too heavy for that. And, what's wrong with using a flatbed? She weighed 750 lbs!!! If you had a 750 lbs refrigerator, you're not going to haul it away in a Honda Civic. You're going to need a flatbed or a huge ass truck.
With that being said, I can totally understand why the family would be upset, but...what else were they supposed to do? Honestly? |

Rep Power: 79 | | no i agree with that as well, 750lb is a crapload of weight. The filthy carpet was pretty crappy, a sheet would have done. But in all seriousness, you cant go around acting like a clown and then get all up in arms when people treat you like one. |

In my opinion, when someone is that heavy, its because they are past rational choices and decisions. She was a prisoner in her own body, for whatever reason and I am sure she hated every minute of it. No one wants to be in that position, no one wants to be considered a spectacle. I was well on my way to being one of those people, because of my eating disorder. I have gained 20 pounds in one month (do that math people, i ate a shit load of food) I was lucky enough to have support from friends and family to work through it, and start reversing the effects of my binging.
There are people on this forum who are 500+ pounds, who Im sure feel that they dont deserve to be treated so disrespectfully.
I agree, she died because of her inability to live a healthy life... as do many others unfortunately. To me, that does NOT make her any less deserving of compassion. |

Rep Power: 79 | | | no its all true and valid points. But she COULD have lost weight, she just chose not to. Everyone can make excuses up why they cant, but when it comes down to it, you choose to put the food in your mouth.
And in fact when you are 750lb im guessing you probably cant walk so well so you also have an enabler who probably needs emotional blackmail to keep feeding you or other ways. |

What exactly is more "respecftul" and more compassionate than a carpet? A bed sheet? A linen cloth? A silk tapestry?
A person of "normal" weight is hauled off in a zipped up, plastic bag which is tossed up on a stretcher. Yet, people think that's respectful. But, is a plastic bag really any more respectful than a carpet? Is it more respectful than a carpet because it has a zipper on it? |

I do feel a sheet ....*silk tapestry would have been an added bonus .. * would have been more respectful. I saw my mom leave in *zipped up plastic bag* it was an awful thing, but necessary. Had she come out wrapped in a dirty carpet, yes...it would have been far more difficult situation for me to bare. |

Rep Power: 9 | | oh my goodness 750lbs??? wow thats A LOT of weight!!??
how did she live like that?? though i suppose the point is she wasn't really living at all was she?? very sad...esp for her family. to get to that weight she must have had some REALLY serious emotional & eating/food issues...as to to get to that size...all rational & i would think hope as all but left. it would take an extermely strong person to make their way back from such weight gain...i for one i know i couldn't do it...ever...that would be one weightloss battle.
ps i'm not even going to try & work that out in stones/lbs...too scary!!! |

ps i'm not even going to try & work that out in stones/lbs...too scary!!! | Hi Baglady, I agree that she must have had some major eating, emotional issues *how could she not* There have been people that were bigger, that have lost huge amounts of weight. But, they must have had either a huge support system or something made them seek medical help. The scary thing is, you dont have to be 750lbs to die of weight related issues... thats why I am here. I was well on my way to 400lbs and im only 5'5 *can we say BALL* lol.
No matter how you look at it, or go through all of the details of it, the situation was unfortunate.
I think she would have been over 53 stones.... (1 stone is 14pounds I think) this is what i get for watching, You are what you eat...lol (English program) |

Rep Power: 19 | | | I honestly believe that there are more people who are physically or mentally ill than there are truly healthy people. It is to the point that a truly healthy human being, both physically and mentally, is actually in the minority. |

53 stone!!! really???!! i wonder how many yrs she over ate for to get that big?? i mean thats really the only difference between this poor woman & anybody else with weight gain problems...TIME....she ate more than her body needed & so have we all too...or else we wouldn't be here...right???
there before the grace of god & all that............
unless of course she binge ate the whole time...y'know huge portions & massive amounts of food everytime she ate...i remember watching a programme yrs ago (before i put on weight) about hugely overweight ppl in hospital (it was in the US) & thinking OMG!!?? why do they continue to eat such junk (getting visitors to sneak them in cheap burgers etc) when they know they are in hospital with health problems b/c of their weight gain???
of course now i think back & understand that they had not dealt with the underlying reasons that made them over eat in the first place...you have to deal with them or at least be aware of them before you can learn to control your overeating & dependence on food. plus of course theres the spiral...first you eat b/c of emotional reasons (whatever they maybe....) then you eat b/c you're fat....& so it goes on....& on...
what the hell i'm fat anyway...give me another burger/whats one more going to hurt?? etc...although it would have been chocs in my case...only realised the other day...that even if my life depended on it...i couldn't tell you when the last time was that i ate chocolate or what type of chocolate it was....
(you have no idea how surreal that sounds to me as i've been a fully paid up member of chocoholics anonymous....for decades....jesus never saying THAT again..........now i feel ancient LOL....but i wonder if there is such a club!!?) | | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
