Weight Loss Programs

Atkins, Fit for Life, Jenny Craig – there are almost as many weight loss programs as people who want to lose weight! Sharing our experiences here will help us all get a handle on the wealth of information — and misinformation — out there.

Low-carb High-Protein Diet.

I've been wondering, how safe is the low-carb high-protein diet ? I stumbled upon this Atkins Facts - Atkins "Nightmare" Diet.

I'm now a little bit scared whether to continue my low-carb high-protein diet.

I would say be careful, I did Atkins, and I lost a ton of weight while cooking up pounds of bacon and eating it, "look ma, no carbs!" But i'm sure its discouraged....

of course I gained all my weight back, PLUS 40 extra, eek!! I read somewhere that you have to stay on atkins for life, otherwise once you start eating normally, your body becomes a FAT MAGNET.. I can attest to the truth of that!

Didnt Dr. Atkins die from a heart attack?

Just b/c you go low carb doesn't mean you have to eat high sat. fat.

To the OP, I think you have to ask yourself why you are thinking about going low carb. There's nothing magical about it.... some people do well with it, others not so much. The secret is eating less calories than you expend in a given period of time. If low-carb is the vehicle that best meets your needs, have at it. Just remember, there are a lot of vehicles to choose from and none are the best fit for everyone.

Eeek! Looks like I have this ditch this diet and find something more healthy. Any recommendation ?

Edit : Yeah Steve, I'm trying to stick to one diet and make a lifestyle out of it. Funny, the cause of my overweight is probably eating too much rice. Looking back it was foolish of me to think that rice doesn't make you fat.

No, you don't look like a fool at all. It's just that rice doesn't make you fat. An intake of calories above and beyond what your body needs leads to an increase in body fat.

How did your brother lose the weight?

What I promote is eating a balanced, calorically-controlled diet consisting primarily of 'healthy' foods in addition to stuff you like too. I've found this to have the highest success ratio and be the easiest thing to follow. Once something like this doesn't work, then might be the time to use a more extreme approach.

The thing is though, assuming calories are controlled on a consistent basis relative to the needs of your body.... it has no choice but to succeed.

I dont know if someone else responded to this comment already but i couldn't pass it without responding!!!...Atkins is a wonderful WOL and is misconstrued all the time!..atkins is not about eating bacon and steaks all the time!...you are to eat Healthy fats, and lower your carbs, while limiting starchy vegtables and increasing Non-starchy ones to your at CCLM.I love this way of eating and am so glad i found it. Low fat Diets are Not for everyone(it definetly wasnt for me...check out sugarfreeshelia.com) as is low carb. Even though it is "exceptable" to eat bacon throughout the day while on atkns i would not do so and if/when i do eat it i prefer turkey bacon,Fat is NOT harmful!!..and just because people chose to misuse the diet doesn't make the diet hamful. And NO dr atkins did not die of an Heart attack he fell and bumped his head on ice outside of his office which put him in a coma which eventually lead to his unfortunate death. you will gain weight when you STOP any lifestyle if you quit a low-fat diet and go back to eating butter and olive oil you'll regain!...if you know you HAVE to have lots of carbs all through the day dont get on atkins,if you LOVE processed sugars dont get on atkins its as simple as that...as for me im almost finished with the book and have done tons of research on it as well as joined supportive forums and couldn't be more pleased...Sorry if i came of mean i just couldn't stand by and let such a healthy and great WOE get such a "BAD RAP"(
