what a dumb idea

I think this is one of the dumbest ways to lose weight. Besides the fact that it doesn't work as you end up on the on 'rollercoaster', it's completely unhealthy. Unfortunately, way too many people still do it because they see that they lose weight ... only to gain it back again ... and then start all over again. Vicious cycle that never really produces any usable results.

you can't really lose weight that way, but you can clean out you system and wash out the toxins. The weight you lose is mostly water and you will get it back, I agree with you on that. I still think it might be a good idea to start a weight loss program this way. You are shrinking your stomach during the fasting so you are not as hungry once you start eating again.

I don't think I would survive fasting. I can't imagine not eating anything for 10 days, but a friend of mine has fasted a few times already and she thinks it's great.

from what I have heard, your stomach doesn't actually shrink. Your metabolism slows down to compensate for the lack of food and tells your brain (and stomach) to not eat as much. It's generally not the quantity of food you eat, it's the type of food.

think about it - if you stuff two plates of pasta in every meal - or the equivalent and then you cut down - eat only half or nothing at all, your stomach has to get smaller. In my early twenties I was on a weight-loss-trip and in then end I couldn't even eat one apple at once - I am sure it had to do with the amount my stomach was able to handle at any one time. I think it was very small at that time. And why do you think it is that when you had a huge meal in the evening you wake up hungry - happens to me. Please correct me if I am wrong, I have no medicinal background on this topic, just my experience.

Thank you Natalie,

I also always experienced that when I ate breakfast that I was hungry before lunchtime and when I skipped it, I could go until the evening without food. I believe that I expanded my stomach and it wanted more.
I have since learned that breakfast is very important, so are the snacks in between and I went from eating once or twice per day to eating five to six times, that doesn't include the cookies and chocolates that I eat in between.

This method of cleansing is only going to put your body into starvation mode. When your body does that, its taking from your muscle. Then when you do eat again its going to store all the bad fats and carbs. Why start your workout on an unhealthy diet, all your doing is hurting yourself. Your body needs fuel to run. You should look at food the way gas is to a car. Put bad gas in and what do you get, don't put any gas in and what happens? There are so many better ways to lose weight. You may not see the results right away, but it is the long term that you should be most concerned with.

I like that comparison with the gas in your car. Never thought of it, but it makes sense.

YEA THAT IS TRUE, NOT ONLY DOES YOUR BODY NEED FOOD FOR FUEL BUT YOUR BRAIN DOES TOO, HAVE U EVER NOTICED THAT IF YOU DONT EAT YOU FIND IF HARD TO THINK AND YOU FIND IT HARD TO CONCENTRATE ON THINGS !! I HAVE GOT A FEW FRIENDS THAT STARVE THEMSELVES , I SEE THAT THEY LOSE WEIGHT BUT THEY LOOK REALLY SICKLY AND THEY ARENT REALLY MOTIVATED TO DO ANYTHING, AND ONE OF MY FRIENDS ENDED UP IN HOSPITAL BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF FOOD, IT MADE HER IMMUNE SYSTEM REALLY WEAK , WELL THATS WHAT I HEARD FROM HER MUM....

Now I am the same way...I need my breakfast, but I used to be able to go without food until late afternoon. Just black coffee would get me until 3.00PM. I actually literally trained to eat more often and now I love my food and if I do skip a meal, I usually make up for it with junk food - not very satisfying, cause I always feel bad afterwards.

i believe the reason you wake up hungry after a large meal or after eating late at night has to do with your blood sugar level and not the expanding of your stomach...

I am a perfect example of what you're all talking about when you say it 'starts the rollercoaster'. I wouldn't be in the pickle I'm in now--metabolism practically shot and in middle age with too much weight on, if it weren't for fasting and crash -very-low-cal diets.

Thanks to passing out a few times and finding out I was hypo-glycemic, I will no longer do this crazy and hateful thing to myself.
