I recently decided to start doing the gi diet. It is not really low carb but it is all about separating good carbs and bad carbs and all of that. Someone told me that Atkins had started doing that too? But I don't know. My maiden name is Atkins so people always seem to think I know everything about it!

Question need atkins advice

hi, can anyone please help me? i just decided to give atkins a try for the first time. this is my first day. since i hate fatty meats and greasy things, all i'm eating is chicken, eggs, lowfat cheese, and sugar-free gum. so far today i've had one boiled egg, a few ounces cheese, about 8 ounces chicken, and 2 pieces of gum. i felt ok after breakfast, but since lunch i feel awful ! all weak and numb in the head. a few minutes ago the i was walking down the hallway at work and everything looked yellow! i'm a little worried, is this a normal reaction to beginning atkins? i have been drinking loads of water, b/c i always do anyway (5-6 liters/day). i think part of this problem may be that i ate cold cuts for lunch which had tons of salt, and i hate hate hate salt. but eating salt seems unavoidable on atkins . i'm not hungry now but i felt faint before eating lunch, then felt bad after eating! is feeling this way the first day normal, and if so when should i expect to feel good again? i can take this for a few days but if it lasts longer than that i won't be able to continue the diet. i would very much appreciate any input from atkins users and veterans here. thanks !

How much sugar were you eating beforehand? Maybe it is a withdrawal from that?? Maybe you aren't eating enough?

i think he has some good ideas, Sugar is useless, white bread is poison, anything overly processed is bad. However My uroligist crapped when I told him I was doing it, It worked ok for awhile but got very old very fast, and why did i have to see a urologist? Kidney stones, Twice. He said adkins can cause them, i am now on potassium citrate for the rest of my life to keep the stones at bay, im not blaming this totally on the Diet but it can be a contributing factor.

Exclamation

you have to exercise for minimun 40 mins before the metabolic switch activates and lets you burn lipids before that the human body will use up all the glycogen in the body which is sugar basically found in the liver.
The best way to exercise is to do little for a long period of time so you don't burn out but you continue after 40 mins if you are looking to lose weight.

Atkins is a diet and diets are fundamentally not good for you.
NUTRITIONAL REGIMES are heathly.

but for some people being obese is life-threatening therefore doctors recommend such an extreme way to live like the Atkins diet.
Therefore unless you really don't think you can lose any weight without going to such extremes and you are OBESE and this is the big one YOU EXERCISE EVERY DAY FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME then I would say Atkins is possibility.
I know second hand people who have lost weight by going on this diet and doctors actually recommeded it because they were going to die they ate so much.

The Atkins diet - Possible Health Risk

Is really this diet safe ?

People which are following Atkins diet eat large amounts of protein and fat.

Doctors from New York University wrote in The Lancet journal of a 40-year-old woman who developed a dangerous condition called ketoacidosis, a dangerous buildup of acids called ketones in the blood which can lead to patients falling into a coma.

Ketones are produced in the liver when insulin levels fall due to starvation or diabetes.

"Our patient had an underlying ketosis caused by the Atkins diet ..."

Post The atkins diet

I've been thinking about switching to the atkins diet, i have a friend who lost a big amount of weight in about 7 months and that made me think.
I dont really mind losing weight slower but right now all im doing is watching my portions and making sure i don't eat junk and all the other bad fattening foods.
I can't stay motivated, i lasted about 3 weeks and lost 15 pounds or so, but for a week now i cannot find the strength to try again, i know what im doing im very aware of it, but i just can't stop it. When i get hungry or i start craving i have no control.
I don't know why it's happnening, but im pretty sure stress plays a part in it.
I've done some research on the atkins on the internet, but the internet is so biased , either i'll find really good feedback or really negative ones, so i'm stuck there.
If anyone is on it or has tried it, can u please tell me if it's a good way to go or if it's something i should avoid, and if it has worked for you or anyone else?

Hello,

I am currenly on Atkins right now... It is a great diet!!! But you have to sacrifice a lot of good foods... I'll tell you the pro's and con's of Atkins in a list!

Cons:

-Can only eat meat, veggies, cheese and other foods in that group
-Sugar and carb cravings like crazy!
-Must take a long time to prepare the food.
-Meals get very repetitive...
-Hard to find things with no carbs or little carbs
-Depletes energy (In my case, at least...)

Pro's:

-Signifigant weight loss (If on it strict)
-No more stomach aches/gas/and all that good stuff...
-Clears up acne on the face
-Will def. work but may be very slow
-Decreases health risks (Diabetes ETC) very much so
-Can eat large portions of the foods you CAN eat
-You get fuller with smaller portions of food.

So... this diet has it's ups and downs, but if you can stick with it- You will get great results!

-K-

** I forgot to add...

With me, the motivation comes and goes... Sometimes I think "YEAH I am gonne burn this fat and I am NEVER going to break this diet!" And other times I think "Oh, I should just forget this diet. Who cares if I'm fat I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Blizzards!!" But I find the best way to stay motivated is to go here!! Look at the before and after pictures and ALWAYS remind yourself that it is possible to reach your goal. (Sometimes a major reason I don't stay motivated is the goal weight, or even the thought of just losing weight seems very impossible, I just can't grasp it) But always remember... It is very possible, no matter how big you are, or how low your metabolism is!!

Good luck- I hope you will go on it with me!

-K-

Hello Misslovely,
Sorry to hear you are struggling, you are doing so good.
My opion adkins you'll miss alot of your favorite foods such as fruits
low calorie yummy deserts , even the healthy breads wheat ect.I heard if you eliminate a food group you usually set yourself up to fail or gain it back
later! But then again it works for some people.I wish you all the best in whatever you choose. You are strong no matter what you choose!Tammy

Hey there!
I did the atkins diet about a year ago and yes it did work for the time that I was on it but what I learned was that for me at least, its impossible to barely eat carbohydrates. They are what give me energy in order to exercise and be able to go about my day. The true key to losing weight is that it is a lifestlye change. If you go on a diet one of the things to think about is that if you can do it for the rest of your life and if you cant then what will happen once you go off of it? i think it is very much a personal choice and i know exactly how you are feeling in the motivation aspect! you are doing a great job and all you have to do is keep on going

I did the atkins diet last year and went from 155 to 125 in about 2 months. HOWEVER!... It made me really sick. The first two weeks especially are very strict and extremely low carbs. I was so sick of lettuce I wanted to vomit just at the thought of eating another lettuce leaf.

The results are good though. But after I went off of it, I went back up to 145 and here I am again. If you are going to continue the low carb lifestyle past the weight loss, then I would think the weight is more apt to stay off.

IMO, I would think about the lifestyle change you want to make... eating healthier utilizing the food guide pyramid....low carb...southbeach or whatever. Maintaining a healthy body is a lifetime of work... or so I have been told.

Without a doubt, The dead doctor's diet sure catches everyone's attention for this very reason - it works and you can lose big weight, but can you maintain the weight loss ?? after all, the Atkins isn't a lifestyle change so even if you jumpstart or even hit your goal weight on it, you still have to have a maintenance plan which means you have to start all over again so why not get under way with your lifestyle change now as you loss weight !!

I don't view the Atkins as a 'gimmicky' diet because you don't have to purchase liquids, shakes, pills, pre-packaged shit and videos etc.. but it will leave you with work to do when it's all said and done. Outside of The Mediterranean Diet, I think almost all the 'diets' out there will leaving you grasping for a maintenance phase eventually.

.

This is so perfect. I'd hate to see you abandon this now. This is a sweet start for a lifestyle change You have all the components in place, more than Atkins will allow you too.

Atkins will leave you with cravings too. Any 'diet' will. A lifestyle change will teach you (or more like you will teach yourself) what to eat when the cravings arrive.

We all have stress and we all need to have incredibly strong minds to overcome our bad habits and weaknesses. Switching diets will not unlock our discipline, only our mind can.

Well its pretty awesome to have such a large sample to poll from. I hope you make your informed decision based on knowing 'diets' aren't a permanent solution.
