Is there a formula for calories?

Does anyone know of a formula that will estimate calories for ANY exercise based on HR etc? My elliptical gives me calories and I have seen the tables for different exercises. It seems to me that there could be a formula that covers any situation based on age, resting HR, actual HR and body weight. If you know these four parameters don't you know how many calories you are expending?

Estimates for calories burned are just so inaccurate. Focus instead on your intensity and what kind of results you are getting.

That being said if you must have a calculator...
